This is a well-located, standard hotel which I stayed at for five days during a conference. My room was quiet and clean. The staff are kind and I was able to request an extra blanket, kettle, and herbal tea. The breakfast is surprisingly decent. My only major complaint is that the free included wifi is extremely slow at 5mbps, which is barely usable for Zoom or videoconferencing.
We recently hosted a two-day work retreat/conference at the Matrix Hotel, and the experience was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. The staff were incredibly polite, attentive, and accommodating — they went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly.nnOur external guests, who joined us from different cities, also had an excellent stay and shared how pleasant and comfortable their experience was. The accommodations were modern and cozy, and the meeting space/ballroom was beautiful — perfect for our event setup.nnA special shout-out to Patrick and his team for their professionalism and support with all the technical aspects of the conference — they made everything effortless for us. And of course, a big thank you to the chef and kitchen staff for the amazing food throughout the event!nnOverall, a fantastic venue with equally fantastic people. Highly recommend the Matrix Hotel for both business and leisure stays in downtown Edmonton.
The customer service was great. The room are spacious although I think they could use an update. Great breakfast options. Overall enjoyable stay with great accessibility.
I attended a mini conference here this week; it included lunch, and there were to be vegan options. But... I had a sandwich composed of two pieces of white bread with a single piece of lettuce and the thinnest slice of something I couldn't identify; meanwhile, other attendees had white bread too, but with delicious looking and weighty fillings, or sumptuous croissants. There was a green salad for all, but the dressings looked iffy how hard is it to supply two little bottles of oil and vinegar? and neither were labelled for their allergens. Then the soup; I asked the server and he couldn't say if there was milk in it to which I am allergic, hence the vegan stance. When it came time for dessert, lots of choice for the omnivores, and nothing at all for others, not even a few pieces of melon or pineapple, which is the usual starting point nowadays. So, all in all, while the Matrix fulfilled all the omnivores' cravings, they only begrudgingly supplied the vegan basics for lunch. I would say, to put it bluntly, that the Matrix put on an unwelcoming, and honestly, unbecoming, lunch for anyone who might be vegan. The large vegan-labelled platter of sandwiches was cleared out, demonstrating a cohort of preference, but they didn't respond to it. I contacted the organizers, who said they had indeed arranged for vegan options, but the Matrix didn't follow through. Beyond whatever internal miscommunications might have occurred I'm being generous; it could as easily be a chef's belligerency, the Matrix needs to have inclusive food options become the starting point of its hospitality culture, suggesting these options even to conferences that might not have thought of it. There needs always to be some food that everyone can eat, regardless of scruples, principles, religion, or medical considerations. It's a nice little hotel, my cousin enjoyed it immensely when he stayed there ten years ago, but this is a one star situation.nnOkay, you get a second star because of the bike racks. Nice little lock up area, but there are only two hookup stands, and both were used. Don't you realize you're on a major downtown bike route? You need two more bike hookups, and there is room for them.
We recently stayed at The Matrix for the second time and had another great experience. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the rooms are comfortable, and the showers are spacious. Breakfast is a highlight, with delicious food and attentive service.nHowever, we did have a couple of concerns. During both of our visits over the past four years, we've noticed homeless individuals occasionally frequenting the lobby overnight. The man claims he was staying in a room upstairs but spent all his time sleeping in the lobby and did not look like he was a guest of the hotel. which can feel unsettling. I could be wrong and possibly you have a program with the government to house unhoused, but for a hotel of your standards it does not look good and makes guests nervous Also, on this trip, the fire alarm went off multiple times overnight, and in some cases, it didn’t sound in the room. While we reported this to the front desk, it’s something that needs attention for guest safety. Despite these issues, I’d still recommend The Matrix to friends and family traveling.
