Story

St. Michael’s Hospital is a Catholic teaching and research hospital founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1892 to care for the sick and poor of Toronto's inner city. Affectionately known as the Urban Angel, St. Michael’s is renowned for providing exceptional patient care. As downtown Toronto’s adult trauma centre, the hospital is a hub for neurosurgery, complex cardiac and cardiovascular care, diabetes and osteoporosis care, minimally invasive surgery and care of the homeless and disadvantaged. St. Michael’s is also one of the province’s major sites of care for critically ill patients.

Mission

Established in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to care for the sick and poor, St. Michael's Hospital remains dedicated to treating all with respect, compassion and dignity.

The working receptionist on the 14th floor at 9/5/2025 around 5:36pm is absolutely terrible. Her phone etiquette was not appropriate at all, and incredibly unprofessional. She is well aware of this fact as she wouldn’t give me her name.nnI was attempting to call on behalf of my collapsed uncle staying here. I am more than happy to abide by HIPPA as I am not yet listed as an emergency contact. I 100% cannot know the information I was looking for, and I understand.nnHowever, her tone, choice of words, were so incredibly unprofessional. Instead of bridging the gap between my uncle in hospice and reuniting with family, she decides to simply be rude. Absolutely no empathy. She didn’t even inquire if I was listed as an emergency contact or even wanted to look. A few simple clicks to help me out. She simply just wanted to hang up. I understand, maybe she is having a bad shift. I am glad I took it upon myself to ask what I could possibly do. My uncle doesn’t have a functioning phone as well, and the receptionist knows that. This is so incredibly sad.nnI never want to write google reviews but this is my attempt of having my voice heard.nnAs a healthcare student, I always hate to see people lacking empathy and compassion working at these hospitals… You have patients suffering and life is fragile. I am more than understanding, kind and use a gentle tone to handle these situations.nnI truly wish she had given me her name, but it only solidifies the fact she is trying to avoid being reprimanded. I am so sorry to all the families and patients that had to talk to her.nnIf the any hospital management wants to further this conversation, I would be more than happy to. The lines are recorded as well, please take a look. I really wish investigation is done. I hope the team decides to bring professionalism into this hospital. Please, please, please.nnThank you
My husband recently underwent C5-C6 Surgery and I wanted to personally convey our sincere thanks to Dr. Ahn. We were both so appreciative of his excellent communication. Before the procedure, he took the time to clearly explain every step and answer all of our questions, which greatly reduced our anxiety. His confidence put us at ease. The operation itself appears to have been a great success. Gerson’s recovery has been steady, and we credit his skill and expertise for the excellent outcome.nnThank you for the dedicated and compassionate care provided of the staff as well. Hubby had angiogram at cardiac investigative unit today with great results and needed a stent.. Staff was wonderful. Very friendly, professional, attentive and made sure he was comfortable after procedure. Special thanks to doctors and nurses involved. Peter in recovery was very informative and explained procedure in layman terms. Way to go team! Your dedication to caring for others is admirable. We both are grateful and found the experience a positive one.
My sister was a client of breast imaging and was v scaired. She cancelled x1 already. The clerk was very perceptive, kind and reassuring. Out of the ordinary skills for a clerk in a hospital! We were very impressed. Well done mammography department
I had a very positive C-section experience at SMH. All the doctors and nurses, especially Dr. Tatiana, were incredibly empathetic and personable. They consistently checked in on me and made me feel completely supported throughout the procedure and my recovery.n​The hospital's breastfeeding classes were truly life-changing. I had doubts about whether I could breastfeed, but their guidance and recommendations gave me the confidence and knowledge to do it correctly. They were also very attentive to my baby, ensuring her health and teaching me essential care skills.n​The semi-private room was a bit of a challenge—it was small, and my comfort depended on the other mom in the room. Still, given the high quality of care I received, I would absolutely choose this hospital again for a future pregnancy.
