Vancouver General Hospital

Story

Vancouver General Hospital is a medical facility located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the largest facility in the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre group of medical facilities. VGH is Canada's second largest hospital, after The Ottawa Hospital.Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for all operations at Vancouver General Hospital.HistoryThe Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) first opened in 1886 as a nine-bed tent, its primary use to treat railway workers. On June 13, 1886, a fire destroyed the tent hospital and by July, a new, one-storey building was built. In September, the City of Vancouver took over the facility, which became the City Hospital. In 1888, located at the southern edge of the original Gastown settlement, a 35-bed hospital opened, as the tent infirmary becomes too small. The upstairs ward was for female patients, the downstairs ward for males. In 1899, the Vancouver City Hospital Training School for Nurses was opened. In 1902, British Columbia provincial legislature transferred control from the city's board of health to a board of 15 directors. Vancouver City Hospital was renamed to Vancouver General Hospital. In 1906, in Fairview Ridge, overlooking False Creek, a new building, the Heather Pavilion, began housing staff and patients. The University of British Columbia Medical School opened clinical facilities at VGH in 1950.In 1959, VGH opened the "Centennial Pavilion" (named in commemoration of the centennial of the founding of British Columbia as a British Crown colony, in 1858), which at the time was the largest part of the VGH facilities.

My husband has been discharged from the hospital after his lung cancer surgery. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the medical staff.nnTo the surgeon who performed the operation, the nurses, the anesthesiologist, and everyone who was there during the surgery — thank you so much for your skill, care, and dedication.nnI am especially grateful to the nurses in the recovery room who stayed up through the night to take care of him. The gratitude I feel in my heart cannot be fully expressed in words, but I believe it can be felt.nnThank you sincerely for everything you have done. I wish all of you happiness, peace, and good health always.
If I would take stars off, it would be only due to medical care underfunding and NOT for the hospital itself. My 70 years old father presented with tremendous muscle and joint pains, chills, night sweats, and ridiculously high inflammation marker. We were extremely lucky to go to the VGH on Thursday night because that is when Dr. Freeman had his shift. We were immensely impressed and satisfied with his care and practice. What an immaculate doctor! The wait was long because it exceeded 7 hours BUT 1 it was worth every minute of it thanks to Dr. Freeman and 2 keep in mind that even if you sit there for 7-10 hours and end up going home, these doctors do not have the same privilege and are still left there caring for patients. They don't have the luxury to sit down. They are there around and about tending to urgent emergencies. MUCH appreciate ALL the doctors and nurses out there! Anyhow, Dr. Freeman is truly an angel sent from heaven. In a time where I was expecting the worse, Dr. Freeman was very meticulous asking a lot and right questions, he did necessary tests to rule out my biggest concerns like sepsis or cancer and he made the 7 hour wait so much more bearable and anxiety free. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to him and his team!
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the exceptional care I received at the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department on February 22nd.nnI was admitted around noon and, although I waited until 6pm before being discharged, the entire examination process was smooth and well organized. Throughout my time there, I was treated with kindness, professionalism, and genuine compassion.nnI was first greeted by Olivia, who was incredibly attentive, thoughtful, and kind. She has such an easygoing and cheerful personality that immediately helped me feel relaxed and safe under her care.nnI also met Ms. Aneesa Khan, the intern working with Dr. Tina Bhandari. Ms. Khan was soft-spoken, patient, and very thorough in her work. I sincerely thank Dr. Tina Bhandari for her reassurance and patience in carefully explaining my situation. She took the time to conduct a detailed and thoughtful examination. Bravo to Dr. Bhandari and Ms. Aneesa Khan for their outstanding professionalism and compassionate care.nnDuring my ultrasound, the technologist who performed the test was wonderful, patient, and caring. Her gentleness and knowledge made the experience much more comfortable for me, and I am very thankful for her professionalism.nnFinally, Lindsey patiently explained the next steps for my follow-up with the hematologist, Dr. Erica Paterson. Dr. Paterson was also gentle and patient, and I am grateful for her clear guidance and attentive care.nnThe reason for my emergency visit was due to a difficult experience during a recent colonoscopy and endoscopy, where I was poked four times on my forearm by a student nurse attempting to find a vein for injections. It was quite distressing. My forearm became swollen and painful, and I developed a blood clot in the area where multiple attempts were made. As a result, I went to the Emergency Department five days after my procedures feeling anxious and concerned. However, the emergency team in area D at Vancouver General Hospital treated me with such kindness and professionalism that it truly made a difference in my recovery experience.nnThank you all for your dedication, compassion, and outstanding care. Your professionalism and humanity are deeply appreciated.
I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the wonderful paramedics and staff in Emergency especially Dr. Smith, for the excellent care and comfort, and compassion I received on Thursday, February 26th. I’m a 72 year old senior who had a bad fall onto my head, and bruising and muscle sprains all over my body. The ambulance attended immediately. Ortal and her partner went over and above assisting me. I was taken right into a bed, and received X-rays & a CT scan, and was able to go home 5 hours later. I’m extremely grateful to our overworked medical staff who treated everyone around me with such professionalism. Thank you so very much!
I just came from there right now as we speak: If I die my family has all the information to sue! I can’t believe the way I was treated. I don’t know if the lady that did my initial check in was Islamophobic or racist or both. It felt like I was dealing with a robot. No care nothing. it was a blond lady. she tried to rush part where patients explain what their are experiencing. I tried to explain to her that I’ve been dealing with stuff for weeks; chest pains, the endometriosis pains have been getting stronger and worst, a few weeks ago I was coughing bloody mucus, blood in my stool and leading to today diarrhea and now I went because of weakness, when I turn my eyes it feels like the room is spinning I told her and this is literally the look she had the whole time “” omg I was so frustrated but I was too weak. It was an odd feeling I’ve never felt before weakness mixed with frustration and defeat! She told me “your vitals are fine it might be an infection the puts me in a section where I was there for so long, I literally told her the chest pains were coming back. And this was her “”. While I was in the acute waiting area I could feel pelvic and chest pains rushing back and went to ask for Advil; I could feel a stinging pain in my chest coming. All I could picture is me crying in pain once it’s hits an extreme level of pain and I don’t want to feel the chest pain WITH the endo pain together at the same time so I asked for Advil. And one lady said “I’m on break” so another lady comes out the lady on break goes “I don’t know who she is” referring to me. You know the anger I had in me ?!? I feel like people should be allowed to lawyer up in situations like this. Because this is insane I’m a human being. If you can’t be a caring person don’t work at the hospital. The lady was rushing back and forth and told me at one point “I’ll be right with you” then she left again. I said I’ll go home and at least I’ll have Advil at home. I could feel tears and I don’t want to cry there. I also have some mental health issues so that didn’t help the situation either. I’ve never given a review to a HOSPITAL but I’m so so angry and sad. I came to the hospital because I was scared. I thought I was going to get help. I feel like I’m just waiting to die? Is that when you will care if someone has died? Why do hospitals treat black patients like we don’t feel pain and hurt and sadness?!? Now this is on here for the world to see and my family has all the details of what I had to go through today and if something happens to me just know you’ve failed VGH. You’ve failed. And my family and friends won’t and will never quit until justice is served. My blood is in your hands VGH.
