Vancouver General Hospital

Story

Vancouver General Hospital is a medical facility located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the largest facility in the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre group of medical facilities. VGH is Canada's second largest hospital, after The Ottawa Hospital.Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for all operations at Vancouver General Hospital.HistoryThe Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) first opened in 1886 as a nine-bed tent, its primary use to treat railway workers. On June 13, 1886, a fire destroyed the tent hospital and by July, a new, one-storey building was built. In September, the City of Vancouver took over the facility, which became the City Hospital. In 1888, located at the southern edge of the original Gastown settlement, a 35-bed hospital opened, as the tent infirmary becomes too small. The upstairs ward was for female patients, the downstairs ward for males. In 1899, the Vancouver City Hospital Training School for Nurses was opened. In 1902, British Columbia provincial legislature transferred control from the city's board of health to a board of 15 directors. Vancouver City Hospital was renamed to Vancouver General Hospital. In 1906, in Fairview Ridge, overlooking False Creek, a new building, the Heather Pavilion, began housing staff and patients. The University of British Columbia Medical School opened clinical facilities at VGH in 1950.In 1959, VGH opened the "Centennial Pavilion" (named in commemoration of the centennial of the founding of British Columbia as a British Crown colony, in 1858), which at the time was the largest part of the VGH facilities.

The nurses are overall helfpul and are concerned about the welfare of the patients. The ones that were taking care of my wife seemed younger like in their 20s/30s. Just an observation and doesn't imply anything. I thank Jesus that my wife was in a private room. The rooms are assigned by availability and the condition of the patient so it's on a case by case basis as I saw some patients were placed in the hallway. The ones that were in the hallway, though, seemed to be in better health than the ones in private and semi-private rooms. There are rooms were my wife was located with around 5 or more patients. These rooms with more patients didn't have sound proofed dividers but were separated by curtains. I think this is not so much the fault of the hospital as the government. We really should have a law to be enacted to place personal responsibility of those in charge in government offices for their decisions. I pray for wisdom in the leadership in the hospitals and in our government, Father, in Jesus' Name. Bless them and I pray for Your Righteousness and Justice in every area. Amen.
Nursing staff here in the Apheresis Clinic & Ambulatory clinic Leon Judah Blackmore Pavilion are top notch!nnI still believe that… even if they were paid double of what they currently receive … that it still wouldn’t be enough!!nnPlease remember to be kind to them!nnWe are so blessed to have such amazing people like our BC nurses in our lives!nn:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::nHowever, since I wrote this review above, I have been dealing primarily with the leukemia/BMT daycare ambulatory unit on the other side.nnI have received nothing except top notch Care and made to feel like a king or a VIP.., every time I have an appointment.nnAll of the staff from the front end reception area and to the amazing and incredible caring nurses I’ve been privileged to meet and be cared for by … as well as all the other specialist from OT to Pharmacists to the dietician to all of the incredible doctors that work here every day of the week!nThey are all such amazing angels who truly care for their cancer patients!!nThey each deserve to receive five stars !!nnPS: elevators are being renovated here in Blackmore Pavilion old VGHnAllow yourself extra time - plus new elevators have weight sensors built in… so it may bypass your floor!
I had an ablation performed on Aug 19.nEveryone involved was great, from top to bottom. The surgeon took the time time explain the process before he started and again in the recovery room took the time to explain the procedure for recovering at home.nExcellent all around the hospital.nSupport staff and operating nurses were very efficientnWell done everyone at VGH!!nJohn Jefferson
My sister was transported to Vancouver General after suffering a massive stroke while on vacation. She was in a coma for quite a long time in the ICU. The staff was very attentive to her needs and was crucial in allowing family, who were thousands of miles away, to speak to her and Facetime on a cell phone in their unit. This meant everything for us to see her and encourage her. She has a long way to go to recover but we are eternally grateful to the staff for their efforts.
Dear Patient Relations Team,nnI am writing to formally complain about the conditions and treatment I experienced during my recent stay at Vancouver General Hospital. I was admitted for surgery on May 17,2024, and my subsequent experience has left me deeply concerned about the quality of care and overall patient management at your facility.nnAfter my surgery, the last night I was moved to a hallway due to the apparent lack of available rooms. The hallways were overcrowded with beds and other sick patients, creating an environment that felt chaotic and stressful. This is far from the standard of care I expected from such a reputable institution.nnWhile in the hallway, I did not have proper access to nurses or necessary medical support. This lack of access compromised my post-operative recovery and made me feel neglected and vulnerable during a critical time. The absence of privacy and the constant noise added to my discomfort and anxiety.nnI understand that hospitals can face high demand and capacity issues, but the conditions I experienced were unacceptable and not conducive to recovery. Patients deserve a safe, quiet, and hygienic environment to heal, and the hallway situation fell drastically short of this standard.nnI would like to request a detailed explanation of why this situation occurred and what measures are being taken to prevent similar experiences for other patients in the future. Additionally, I would appreciate information on how to proceed with filing a formal complaint and seeking compensation for the inadequate care I received.
