Burnaby Hospital

Story

Burnaby Hospital, is a healthcare facility located in Burnaby, British Columbia and operated by the Fraser Health Authority . One of the largest hospitals outside the City of Vancouver, it serves the communities of Burnaby and East Vancouver. A 314-bed primary and secondary care centre, patient care services include general surgery, medicine, perinatal, neonatal ICU, critical care and emergency services.OverviewBurnaby Hospital is a university-affiliated hospital with the University of British Columbia, and serves as a training facility for the Family Practice Residency Program, the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program, and the Department of Orthopaedics at UBC.The Burnaby Hospital Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Burnaby Hospital. The foundation was established in 1982 to raise financial resources needed for life saving diagnostic, surgical, and medical equipment, innovative tools for patient care, and other community healthcare needs. It uses a donor-centred approach, along with its annual fundraising events, the Rhythm of Life Run and Walk and the Slice, to achieve its objectives.HistoryIn the 1940s, the citizens of Burnaby had a vision of a community hospital to serve the needs of its growing population. An Auxiliary was formed March 17, 1943, inspired by the dedication of Nurse Essex. They named it the “Nurse Essex Auxiliary”. Later, in the early ‘40s, the South Burnaby Auxiliary was formed and these two Auxiliaries, plus twenty five other organizations joined together to build a community hospital in Burnaby.

The worse health care you can imagine. I'm not allowed to go to the washroom but they haven't changed my diaper in 7 hours. I asked twice. Now I'm lying in my own urine for about an hour - the diaper of course has overflown. They asked me 4 hours ago if I want anything to eat, but didn't deliver any food. There were no private rooms available, and the person beside me, shits every hour in bed. The room stinks like a septic tank. Nobody comes to open the window, when they come, the window stays open for an hour because - of course - nobody comes to close it. It's 3 degrees outside, and I started coughing from this draft. The window is just beside my bed. I keep pushing the nurse button 10 tims and nobody shows up. Nurses are rude and short with patients. They couldn't put IV properly, and now my hand and forearm are all bruised. It's a nightmare, not a hospital. Avoid by all means if you can.nAn update - Everything changed when Sharon, the night nurse came on duty. She was extremely helpful all night, and checked on patients throughout all night even without being called. I'm very grateful to her - it's very difficult to lie in bed and feel so helpless when no one seems to care. Thank you very much Sharon, you're a real nurse, and an angel!
This is the worst hospital considering we are, I think in a developed world. Have been to health care facilities in third world countries and they are far better than the sad and sorry state of this hospital in Canada.nnWorst nursing and post op care. Family member was admitted for knee replacement surgery with no post op care or advice from surgeon or any doctor whilst in recovery. Seems like they are extremely understaffed with nurses who really don't care about your well being. Sad that nurses in the ward make all the decisions regarding your situation. Oh forgot to mention that the only time we heard from the surgeon was on the day our family member was discharged. However there were a couple of nurses that were very kind and expressed sympathy towards us.nnHospitals is undergoing major construction to offer better facilities but Fraser health needs to focus on staff.
Worst emergency nurses ever. They don’t know the patients name in their area, don’t even check the list and said go ask help desk. Eventually my sister was that area and that nurse said “I’m sorry nursing is busy while she was looking on the phone and doing instagram”.nnWhen the machine was alarming they are keep ignoring and talk about travel to Seattle, can’t even imagine this is happening in emergency area.nnWhen I was asking for my sister’s condition, and trying to talk to nurse, she seems like very annoyed and said “speak loudly I cant hear you” then I just asked about my sister nurse said “Go ask her she is an adult” even I said her English is not good enough for medical words please explain me I’m her family member and protector, nurse keep said “Go ask her she knows and she is an adult, can’t patent info” but I was the one her emergency contact person and deserve to know.nnSuch a horrible emergency nurse and they are stealing government money, better fix the attitude and work ethics.
I have been to every hospital in Vancouver from UBC to Burnaby in the past 2 yrs, prior to that, never sick so my delusions of the Canadian Healthcare System were still intact ‍ I have a personal observation on Lower-Mainland wait-times: Burnaby Hospital got me in the fastest, on 3 separate occasions recently, 2 x CT Scans & 1 Biopsy - weeks rather than months! But here’s the odd part in that - THEY seem legit busy. Friendly staff always on the move, full wait room, admin helpful and keeping me aware of my wait in person and calling me prior to confirm. Conversely, waited 8 mos for a scan at a smaller Van hospital, at one point I called and the admin actually told me to put it out of my mind for this year, but I am in a list. I share a pic of that waiting rm when I arrived 11am. I got there last week, ppl strolling around La de da and ZERO ppl waiting. Up to the window to check in and had to stand there and listen while staff finished making their lunch plans. Also, I have injected contrast, never have I drank anything, no one informed me. So they made me drink something and I have had kidney/flank/gut pain for 14 days since. What? It was an awful experience and they weren’t even busy by all accounts! Also, a couple months wait for a Clinic at VGH, same. No one, couldn’t even find staff. They don’t have reception at THE big reception desk.nnI started taking pics of empty waiting rooms. Yet citizens know, we wait too long out here. Pretty sure Coastal gets a lot of funding, I buy my Hero’s Lottery Tickets too!nAll that to say…nBurnaby Hospital and Fraser Health is out here helping the people, getting us in, pressing on and working hard and I for one HIGHLY appreciate it! Thanks!
Went to ER few days ago due to extreme and acute pain. Had to wait 7 hours to see a doctor for 30 seconds and it was horrible wait time, but the nurse Monica was really helpful, knowledgeable and very kind. Overall all the staff were relatively nice and kind. They cared people as much as they can, I just saw bunch of people who didn’t have patience. Maybe the ER needs to hire more staff to reduce wait time.
