Story

Richmond Hospital is a medical facility located in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority is responsible for Richmond Health Services and Richmond Hospital.HistoryRichmond Hospital first opened February 26, 1966 with 132 beds, and was first known as Richmond General Hospital. The first patient was admitted and the first baby was born in the hospital on March 17, 1966. The original building is now known as the "North Tower"; the "South Tower" was completed in 1980. In 1992 Richmond General Hospital was rebranded as "The Richmond Hospital" while the Minoru Residence extended care facility was opened two years later. In 1997 the Westminster Health Centre building was opened to house administration, psychiatry and ambulatory care. The same year the hospital was amalgamated with the Vancouver/Richmond Health Board. In 1999, due to space opened up by opening the Westminster building, the Emergency Department and Diagnostic Imaging were considerably expanded. The Vancouver/Richmond Health Board was re-structured to become part of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, which includes "Richmond Health Services" as the local umbrella organization. The hospital is currently part of Richmond Health Services and now known simply as "Richmond Hospital" (without the "The").

I recently gave birth at Richmond Hospital Birth Center and I cannot thank the team enough for their incredible care.nMy delivery doctor, Dr. Kim Cottick, was fantastic. Thanks to her professionalism and skill, I had a very smooth natural birth.nI was also blessed with the most amazing nurses: Wendy, Angel, Katie, Autumn, and Sheen…Thank you so much for your attentiveness, patience, and kind support during my labor. You truly went above and beyond.nI also want to mention the anesthesiologist I’m sorry I forgot his name. He was a lifesaver! His technique was excellent, and the epidural greatly relieved my pain, allowing me to rest and push effectively.nThank you to the entire team for such a positive experience!
Dear Sir/Madam,nI would like to express my concern regarding the attitude and professionalism displayed by some staff members at Richmond Hospital.nPatients come to the hospital seeking medical assistance, care, and support during difficult and stressful moments in their lives. Unfortunately, my recent experiences while asking questions or going through registration procedures left me feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. The attitude shown by certain staff members appeared impatient, cold, and at times dismissive, as though patients were inconveniencing them simply by asking for help.nHealthcare is not only about medical treatment — it is also about compassion, patience, empathy, and respectful communication. The way patients are treated emotionally can significantly affect their overall healthcare experience.nI sincerely hope Richmond Hospital will review the quality of patient-facing service and provide additional training or support where necessary. Every patient deserves to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their background, language, or ethnicity. I also hope staff members approach all patients without prejudice or discriminatory attitudes.nI understand that healthcare workers are often under pressure and working in difficult conditions. However, professionalism and basic kindness should always remain part of patient care. If certain individuals find it difficult to work in a service-oriented healthcare environment, perhaps they should reconsider whether this type of work is suitable for them.nMy intention in writing this letter is not to attack individuals, but to encourage meaningful improvements in patient care and communication.nThank you for your attention to this matter. I hope Richmond Hospital will continue working toward a more respectful, compassionate, and welcoming environment for all patients.nSincerely,nFrank Tsai
On March 26th, 2026, I enterednSurgical Daycare at RGH for knee replacement surgery and 8 hour discharge to home Everyone from the admissions clerk, to the nurses and physicians I encountered were welcoming and excellent at patient centered care. After 40 years of nursing bed-side, community health and teaching I observed a cohesive and supportive staff who offered help to each other and really seemed happy at their jobs. Two nurses in particular I would like to send kudos about were Lawrence who admitted me and Ashley who cared for me when I was discharged from the recovery area. The PAR recovery nurse was also excellent. She did tell me her name but in my groggy state I don’t remember her. She did a slick catheterization when my bladder would not cooperate and was quick to respond to alarm bells and do additional observations.nLawrence: Even though I recognized Lawrence as a former student of mine from 23 years ago, he remained very professional and gave great explanations putting me at ease. We both didn’t say anything until later about our previous relationship. He had a very calm, competent and caring demeanour which let me relax and feel less worried. I noticed how well he worked with the interdisciplinary team.nAshleynAshley was very confident and relaxed in preparing me for discharge. She seemed to know what I needed medications, water, lunch and support when first standing. In fact I felt very safe in her care. From faxing prescriptions, to getting extra food trays ordered from the kitchen, to giving excellent discharge instruction sheets with patient specific hand written notes, I enjoyed watching her coordinate care for a number of clients and keeping everyone’s needs straight.nAll three were super nurses and I felt welcomed and safe and had the best of care.
A huge thank you to Richmond BC’s ER department for their superb knowledge, experience, and care. I have forgotten the names but a sincere thanks to the paramedics who took me to the hospital on Good Friday weekend, 2026. The doctor on call on Saturday evening April 4th was very thorough, diligent, and explained the issue to me clearly. The hospital’s process of connecting all services blood tests, scans, and ultra sound runs extremely smoothly and impressively. Finally, after years of pain and several doctors throughout BC, the doctor on Sunday April 5th made a diagnosis as well as making the effort to connect me to a surgeon. She was very personable and top notch! I will forever be grateful!nIf possible, can you post the medical personnel names.
