Story

Fairmont Royal York, formerly known as the Royal York Hotel, is a large and historic hotel in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Opened on June 11, 1929, the Royal York was designed by Ross and Macdonald (with Sproatt and Rolph) and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway across the street from Union Station. With 28 floors, the château-style building was the tallest building in Toronto at that time, and the tallest building in the British Empire until the construction of Toronto’s Canadian Bank of Commerce tower on King Street one year later.

The hotel has been the residence of choice for Queen Elizabeth II and other members of The Royal Family when in Toronto. The Queen usually has an entire floor reserved for her and her party, occupying the Royal Suite herself.

Today, the hotel hosts royalty of another kind as an official hotel for the annual Toronto International Film Festival.

We had a great stay. We were made to feel very welcome and valued visitors. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was spotless, very comfortable, and well serviced throughout our stay. Excellent service. Made a birthday celebration very special. Room service was great.nThe hotel is in an excellent location. Ideal for transport links. Easy to get to from the main airport on the UP train, with Union Station just across the road, and linked to the station by The Path.nThe front entrance has lots of steps, but easy to avoid by using the lift at the side entrance where cars pull in.nWe would certainly stay again.
Title: Disappointed by Service Lapses at a Premium PropertynnRating: 2 out of 5nnDate of Stay: October 29 – November 1, 2025Location: Fairmont Royal York, TorontonnI stayed at the Fairmont Royal York for a 4-day conference, expecting a seamless experience from one of Canada’s most iconic hotels. While the location and in-room coffee were excellent, several service lapses left me disappointed.nnWhat Went Wrong:nnDirty Pillow on Arrival: The first night, I discovered a pillow with brownish stains—resembling shoe marks. I reported it the next morning and was told the bedding would be replaced. It was, but no note or gesture of apology was offered. For a premium hotel, I expected more than silent correction. I took pictures of the said pillow, which I then physically took to the attending manager.nnHousekeeping Delay: On day two, I returned at 2 PM to prepare for a confidential meeting in my room, only to find it hadn’t been cleaned—despite my earlier request. I had to locate a housekeeper myself, who kindly addressed it within 15 minutes. He explained his shift started at noon due to low occupancy, a detail that should’ve been communicated.nnDeparture Disruption: Despite a “Do Not Disturb” sign, I was interrupted at exactly 12:00 PM on checkout day with a knock asking if I was leaving. I was on a call, and the timing felt abrupt and intrusive.nnValet Parking Concerns: Valet cost me $75/day—totaling $225 for three nights. For that price, a complimentary car wash would’ve been a welcome touch. More troubling, I discovered that approximately $8 in coins I’d left in the vehicle intended as a tip had vanished, leaving only quarters behind. I didn’t confront anyone, but it left a sour final impression.nnWhat I Liked:nnThe location is unbeatable for downtown access.nnThe in-room premium coffee was a standout feature.nnFinal Thoughts:nnThis stay did not reflect the Fairmont standard I’ve come to expect. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves consistency, communication, and guest care. Additionally, I would encourage Canadian hotels—especially those in the luxury tier—to consider installing built-in bidets in their bathrooms. It’s a small but meaningful step toward aligning with international standards of hygiene and guest comfort.nnI won’t be returning to this property unless I see meaningful changes.
This hotel is incredibly expensive for what you get. We stayed here to end a holiday in which we stayed in a lot of tiny towns across Canada. This was sold to us by our travel agent as a bit of luxury after the smaller hotels/inns we had stayed in. The room was dated, old carpets, musty furnishings, scuffed and scratched up furniture. The facilities are ok - the pool was fine although small but the steam room and the changing rooms were absolutely filthy. The main foyer is stunning, and they say they've recently refurbished the hotel, but we found out later that they've refurbished one side of the hotel and they put the higher paying guests and long standing Fairmont members in the nice refurbished side, whilst everyone else gets the old and not particularly nice side of the hotel. The wifi was an absolute joke, we had to sign up to Fairmont's loyalty programme to access it and then go and get the concierge to approve our request. It shouldn't be so difficult to access internet in such an expensive hotel. They also put a mandatory pre charge deposit of 200CAD a night on your card, so be prepared to lose 600CAD off of your card for the week or so it takes them to cancel the charge. This charge is laughable if you see the state of the rooms. The Marriott in Kamloops a tiny mining town was far nicer than this hotel. And probably half the price. The only thing we really liked was the location.
Excellent 3-night stay at The Royal York. The Signature Room was huge with a fireplace and seating room. The decor is updated with the charm of the older style of the hotel. Gym is beautiful and pool area was always empty - including the sauna and steam rooms in the change room. Staff were helpful and food on site was excellent. The location is unbeatable downtown across from Union Station and close to the best restaurants, bars and entertainment.
The Fairmont Royal York’s 12th-floor luxury room offers refined comfort and timeless style, with soft tones, crisp bedding, and elegant furnishings that echo the hotel’s historic prestige. However, the atmosphere and service experience were mixed. When we arrived, a game day event filled the lobby with loud crowds drinking beer, leaving bottles on the stairs, and playing music at nightclub volume — completely at odds with the old-money elegance the Fairmont brand projects. Upon check-in, our room keys failed, leaving us waiting 15 minutes in the hallway, and when retrieving replacements later, reception took nearly 20 minutes debating whether we were even allowed to stay in our room before resolving the issue. Both Reign and the Library Bar also refused in-person reservations, insisting bookings be made online, which felt unreasonable for paying hotel guests. The spa and pool area was similarly disappointing, crowded with noisy families, children running and shouting, and people wearing shoes in the pool area without supervision. Reception initially handled our complaint by offering a 50 CAD dining credit, but this was never applied to our final bill, making the gesture ultimately meaningless. Throughout the stay, staff elsewhere were fast, polite, and accommodating, the room was spotless, and service prompt, yet turndown service was never performed.nnDespite being part of the employee network and a Platinum member of the ALL – Accor Live Limitless loyalty program, we received only a minimal upgrade from the base room to a luxury room, not the suite typically offered at this level. Our request for a bathtub was not honored, and no welcome gesture was provided — no note, no sweet treats, not even bottled water — leaving a disappointing first impression for a supposedly flagship Fairmont experience.
