Story

Fairmont Royal York, formerly known as the Royal York Hotel, is a large and historic hotel in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Opened on June 11, 1929, the Royal York was designed by Ross and Macdonald (with Sproatt and Rolph) and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway across the street from Union Station. With 28 floors, the château-style building was the tallest building in Toronto at that time, and the tallest building in the British Empire until the construction of Toronto’s Canadian Bank of Commerce tower on King Street one year later.

The hotel has been the residence of choice for Queen Elizabeth II and other members of The Royal Family when in Toronto. The Queen usually has an entire floor reserved for her and her party, occupying the Royal Suite herself.

Today, the hotel hosts royalty of another kind as an official hotel for the annual Toronto International Film Festival.

I was given a modern room-- I loved everything about it! The bed, pillows, bathroom, towels, soaps, robe -- everything was top notch! The location is across Union Station, very convenient for walking the PATH took me straight to Eaton Center!. The Skyway was convenient for visiting CN Tower and the Aquarium. I also had breakfast at Clockwork and it was magical! The service was great and the food good. I was apprehensive at first because some of the reviews online mentioned that this was an old hotel. I was really impressed with the Christmas decorations and the homey feel of the hotel. Worthy of it's classic heritage and history!
I try to be grateful for things in life and so I acknowledge and am grateful that I'm lucky I had shelter and warmth during my stay. The hotel is of course right in the centre. I also acknowledge the hard working staff excluding the management who are clearly under immense pressure and do their best.nnBut hand on heart I can't recommend this place at all. They have very rigid and inflexible payment policies which put me in an embarrassing situation regarding settling my bill upfront on arrival which was not flagged on booking through our corporate portal. One of the managers was particularly rude about it.nnThe key card is so flimsy it constantly lost its information which meant going down to reception and joining the chaotic queuing situation there. The hotel is very impersonal, the decor tired, the mini bar and room service extortionate, the bathroom tiny, the hairdryer almost unusable, the rooms are not soundproof you can hear guests coughing next door, the lighting in the room is dim, the view was of a rooftop vent, the windows couldn't be even slightly opened for some fresh air, my bathrobe was removed twice by the laundry and not replaced without a request. The lobby is crowded with parties and events. You don't feel like a guest more like a cash cow.nI'll never be staying here again and I'll also never recommend this to anyone in fact I'll do the opposite if anyone ever asks where to stay in Toronto. It would be far cheaper and the service better in one of the many other hotels you can choose from here.
I am baffled. We just checked in....to one of our two rooms. Check in time is 4pm and it is now 4:07pm. We requested adjoining room when booking, along with early check in. We arrived to find out that we had adjoining rooms and that was where our satisfaction ended. We could not even eat at one of the restaurants while we waited - the wait was 3h long!nnWe finally landed in the Reign bar. We waited >15 mins to have anyone even come to our table. For $22, my husband had the most disgusting Ceasar. I'm mind blown.nnI realize the hotel is busy tonight but I have NEVER experienced such chaos and slow service. We usually stay at the Ritz, the Four Seasons, or the Shangri-La - all of which permit 5 to a room and ends up being cheaper overall for us.nnI will update my review as our weekend goes on but so far, I have been nothing but disappointed. Beyond the beautiful holiday display, don't waste your money.
What a magical place to stay during the holiday season. Club Floor Lounge was well stocked with everything I could desire. Room was very comfortable and exceeded expectations with lots of extra touches. Updated elevator system is great, no trying to guess which one of the eight doors will open. Holiday decorations were prolific, but elegant.
We had a great stay. We were made to feel very welcome and valued visitors. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was spotless, very comfortable, and well serviced throughout our stay. Excellent service. Made a birthday celebration very special. Room service was great.nThe hotel is in an excellent location. Ideal for transport links. Easy to get to from the main airport on the UP train, with Union Station just across the road, and linked to the station by The Path.nThe front entrance has lots of steps, but easy to avoid by using the lift at the side entrance where cars pull in.nWe would certainly stay again.
