Story

Fairmont Royal York, formerly known as the Royal York Hotel, is a large and historic hotel in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Opened on June 11, 1929, the Royal York was designed by Ross and Macdonald (with Sproatt and Rolph) and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway across the street from Union Station. With 28 floors, the château-style building was the tallest building in Toronto at that time, and the tallest building in the British Empire until the construction of Toronto’s Canadian Bank of Commerce tower on King Street one year later.

The hotel has been the residence of choice for Queen Elizabeth II and other members of The Royal Family when in Toronto. The Queen usually has an entire floor reserved for her and her party, occupying the Royal Suite herself.

Today, the hotel hosts royalty of another kind as an official hotel for the annual Toronto International Film Festival.

The Royal York during the holidays is magical. We enjoyed the beautiful decor, the food and spacious deluxe room with our kids. The staff was beyond accommodating and service was top notch. There are aspects of the hotel that show their age, like the bathrooms in the deluxe room, but it is to be expected when there are gold, luxury or signature rooms also available. Overall we had a fantastic stay and cannot wait to book our next trip.
Upgraded to larger room which was immensely appreciated by whole family, and pet! Gold status allowed me to treat to great drinks from the bar and staff always eager! We were at hotel for 4 nights two weeks earlier, and enjoyed both visits equally!! ALL staff is super friendly - especially cleaning staff!
Iconic hotel nearing 100 years old. Perfectly placed across from the train station making it convenient to take the train from the airport. Very near to both arenas, tourist sites and bar and restaurants. Staff was professional, personable, and memorable. The rooms are understandably older and even “remodelled” show their age. That wouldn’t have bothered me but my shower was the worst i have ever had. A friend in another room and same floor had similar experience. Pricey but you pay for the convenience and luxury of the hotel. Definitely worth a stay.
Have stayed here a few times over the holiday season. Recommend booking a signature room or higher to have space. Our king signature room was spacious with an incredible view.nThe hotel is so festive this time of year. Only downside is that it is extremely busy with non guests exploring the decor and using the bars. Make sure to book reservations for your breakfasts or at the library bar if you want to enjoy those services or amenities. Otherwise it’s an extremely long wait to get in, as a hotel guest.
Even though it’s amazing, especially during Christmas, I believe it doesn’t live up to the hype. We had the chance to experience the Gold Suites, but it wasn’t very enjoyable. The price was extremely high, and the service was average—not worth the cost. The room lacked basic amenities, not even a bottle of water. Everything in the minibar came at an additional cost.nnThe Gold Experience does include breakfast, which was simple but sufficient, and lunch, which was very poor. Tea time was okay, and the late-night snacks were decent. However, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. Instead, just visit to enjoy the bars and restaurants inside—they were delightful.
