The Hilltop Bistro

The Hilltop Bistro, nestled in a lovely forested area right on Rutherford Road, is a culinary class act. The atmosphere and decor is refined and pleasant with light jazz in the background and the aromas of fine cuisine in the air. Do make reservations. They are quite busy and you really don't want to be disappointed like that. The culinary expertise and their table service is absolutely top shelf. Every course we had went the extra distance to push it over the top into a gastronomic delight. Their pate is as light as a cloud and practically disperses on your tongue in a burst of flavour. An amazing experience. Their albacore tuna appetizer is much more sizable than I had expected. That's not a complaint. It was perfectly balanced in flavour, with the savoury, salty, acidic and sweet components playing a slightly but noticeably different little tune on your taste buds with every bite. The Butcher's Steak was cooked to perfection and I must concur with our server that it was one of the most savoury and flavourful cuts of beef I've ever enjoyed. Dessert was light and delicious. The attention to detail in plating their creations is a study in how to get it right. Everyone at my table greatly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to another visit. Magnificent.

My sirloin steak was over priced for the quality. Tough & under seasoned. Risotto was a letdown as well. Just so-so. No bang for our buck. The bar was under stocked. They were unable to produce some very basic after dinner drinks. Won't be going back.

The Hilltop Bistro is among Nanaimo's finest. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Their expertise in wine pairing is top notch. As an individual I have frequented their establishment and have never once been disappointed. The detail, presentation and flavor in their dishes are delightful. As a business we have held private functions with three course meals and wine pairings only to have our guests and staff raving about their experience. It's definitely a quality dining experience and worth every penny. If you haven't visited I highly recommend. If you have been before, try it again as their menu changes and their offerings are always delicious.
