The Rio Theatre is Vancouver's favourite independently owned and licensed venue offering an eclectic mix of movies, live music, comedy, burlesque and more.

Story

Buttering your popcorn since 1938, the Rio Theatre is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver's historic Commercial Drive neighborhood. If it can be done, we'll do it. Movies, concerts, comedy, burlesque and so much more.

I came here for Dune 1+2 double viewing, and it was my first time stepping in Rio theatre and it certainly won't be the last. This is an old school theatre and I liked how much legroom you get. The viewing quality is also good, the screen is clear enough, and the sound was on point.nnOverall, 4/5 solid theatre. One thing they could improve on is a bigger men's washroom, it was way too packed.

It had great service, but I think I rate them low in drinks and food since cocktails are mostly ice. I ordered a tap beer and another in a can so I didn't had to do a long line up later and they still opened the can at the counter, even after telling them not to. So if you need to go for drinks and spend 20 minutes waiting in line because there aren't enough ppl serving then you lose the whole show. Also, not enough washrooms, long lines around 20min to be able to use one. The chairs are small but ok.
Perfect sized small venue for shows. We went to Just For Laughs there and it was great. And super easy to get to via Skytrain
Loved the vibes here. A small, local spot, but I honestly prefer these kinds of venues compared to corporate chain movie theatres and appreciate that they play classics here often! Came to see The Shining for the first time and it was a great experience. Moviegoers were respectful during the screening and there was a good mix of people who have definitely seen it before and read the novel, as well as newbies like me who were just getting introduced to it. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and the movie was not as scary as I thought it would be! Actually quite hilarious in some scenes. I got a small popcorn for around $8.50 and they had refills for $2-3 if I remember. Staff were professional and kind. Bathrooms are located on both sides before entering the theatre. Would definitely come back!
