The Rio Theatre is Vancouver's favourite independently owned and licensed venue offering an eclectic mix of movies, live music, comedy, burlesque and more.

Story

Buttering your popcorn since 1938, the Rio Theatre is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver's historic Commercial Drive neighborhood. If it can be done, we'll do it. Movies, concerts, comedy, burlesque and so much more.

See www.riotheatre.ca for our current calendar and showtimes. Steps away from the Commercial Broadway Skytrain and numerous buses, there is also ample street parking adjacent to this beautiful, art-deco artspace.

What can I say? The Rio is a East Van landmark and one of my favorite places to see a show, live or otherwise. From viewings of cult classics (Labyrinth, Rocky Horror), to burlesque, and more, there's always something fun happening here. And with boozy drinks, popcorn, and candy, the Rio has you covered for snacks. There isn't another place in Vancouver like it and I hope to spend many more fun-filled evenings at the Rio.

Great venue for throwback movies and live entertainment (comedy shows, burlesque, live music). Licensed, so you can have a drink in the theatre. Old school movie theatre seating, which kind of sucks if you're sitting behind a tall person. Has a balcony too.

Really a gem of Vancouver. A great old theatre with so much charm. Not only can you catch a film here, but you can find comedy shows, burlesque performances, plays, and improv. Nice little concession as well with popcorn, drink, and a good selection of candy. Just an overall cool place with a lot of character.

Absolutely love the Rio! They host great live events that range from stand-up comedy, burlesque, and musical theatre. They are always playing a great variety of movies including awesome late night screenings. The staff are fun and friendly and they have the BEST popcorn! The theatre is licensed so you can enjoy an adult beverage with your show but there is also a balcony for minors where alcohol is not permitted. Some of my favourite events to attend at the Rio are The Gentleman Hecklers, The Critical Hit Show, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and any burlesque performance they host! Go and have a great time!

Comfortable seats. Delicious popcorn. I'd be interested in going to more movies and events there. The other pleasant thing was that I was warm in the theatre; many times when I go to watch movies, I get quite cold. It feels good to put my money back into the community, and supporting this theatre is doing just that.
