Rio on Broadway

About

The Rio Theatre is Vancouver's favourite independently owned and licensed venue offering an eclectic mix of movies, live music, comedy, burlesque and more.

Story

Buttering your popcorn since 1938, the Rio Theatre is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver's historic Commercial Drive neighborhood. If it can be done, we'll do it. Movies, concerts, comedy, burlesque and so much more.

See www.riotheatre.ca for our current calendar and showtimes. Steps away from the Commercial Broadway Skytrain and numerous buses, there is also ample street parking adjacent to this beautiful, art-deco artspace.

Please note that as we are a licensed venue, minors are not permitted at some events.

The Rio Theatre is one of the most unique places to watch a movie in Vancouver. I love the retro atmosphere and the mix of programming — from classic films to special events and live performances. The seats are comfortable and the vibe feels very local and welcoming. They also serve drinks and snacks, which makes the experience even better. A great spot if you want something more interesting than a typical movie theatre.
Going to the movie theater is such a fun experience: getting buttered popcorn, dim lights fading and then forgetting about everything for an hour to immerse yourself in a story that hopefully makes you feel something intense and finally, you leave thinking --and even changing your perspective about a topic.nnThe Rio Theater opened in 1938, it has been under restoration and constant maintenance to offer high-quality screenings without losing its old-fashioned cinema aesthetic with even level seats and large red curtains.nIt hosts live shows, comedy festivals and movie screenings from all decades and genres at very affordable rates.nnWhat I love the most about it, is that you can always re-watch on the big screen movies that you might have missed, you can even make your movie requests! The staff is very welcoming and helpful.nnGo and live the experience, don't forget that you can always get booze with your snacks!nnPopcorn and gin & tonic #FoodPornnnFollow my IG to see more pics of The Rio Theater and other restaurants and bars weekly reviews in Vancouver: armandfoodie
I came here for Dune 1+2 double viewing, and it was my first time stepping in Rio theatre and it certainly won't be the last. This is an old school theatre and I liked how much legroom you get. The viewing quality is also good, the screen is clear enough, and the sound was on point.nnOverall, 4/5 solid theatre. One thing they could improve on is a bigger men's washroom, it was way too packed.
Had such a fun night at the Rio Theatre for a Colombian stand up comedy show! The performance was absolutely hilarious, so engaging and full of energy from start to finish. The crowd was great, and the whole atmosphere made it even more enjoyable. The venue itself is cozy and well organized, making it a perfect spot for live shows like this. Definitely a memorable night filled with laughs!
I am glad to find a place that place old movies where I can watch them with my son. It is a very nice theater with nice friendly staff.
