The Rio Theatre is Vancouver's favourite independently owned and licensed venue offering an eclectic mix of movies, live music, comedy, burlesque and more.

Story

Buttering your popcorn since 1938, the Rio Theatre is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver's historic Commercial Drive neighborhood. If it can be done, we'll do it. Movies, concerts, comedy, burlesque and so much more.

See www.riotheatre.ca for our current calendar and showtimes. Steps away from the Commercial Broadway Skytrain and numerous buses, there is also ample street parking adjacent to this beautiful, art-deco artspace.

A small boutique cinema that screens many niche but excellent films. I watched Wong Kar-wai’s 2046 in a theater for the first time here. The only downside is that the seats aren’t very comfortable
I love Rio Theatre! My favourite spot is the balcony especially when I saw the Lord of the Rings Marathon here many years ago. It is cozy and has character. I highly recommend this place!
I love the Rio theatre. They host fun events, show some of the best movies and they have a fantastic staff. Their menu is perfect, offering a variety of grilled cheeses, boozy drinks plus your standard theatre fair of soda, candy & popcorn. It's a lovely neighbourhood theatre owned locally. Please support them and check out their monthly calendar of shows!
Visited this place for an international screening of a movie.nnThe theatre has old world charm and very nice options to snack.nnThe art work adorning the walls befits the history of such a heritage location.nnThe seats are not very comfortable, reminded me of low cost airlines.nnI found that the front rows of the balcony have bad viewing experience.
Saw “All we imagine as light” there a few weeks ago and will be definitely going back for more. This theatre is like a portal to my childhood. Love it!
