December 25, 2022 6:50 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Food Pros: -Food came quick. First 2 dishes BBQ duck and beef stir fry flat noodles within 16 minutes and the latter 2 dishes beef and veggies, and oysters in 7 minutes afterwards. -All items came in adequate portions. -All items were fairly priced, relative to other restaurants. Food -Feedback: - Duck and oysters were less fragrant than those in similar restaurants. -Oyster were smaller than those in similar restaurants, and extra batter was used to increase the size slightly. -Beef in stir fry was slightly dry. Stir fry could use more “wok” flavor. This opinion should be taken with caution, as we asked for less oil. Environment: -Busy on Christmas Day, but was still able to get seating within 15 minutes. -Brightly lit environment with comfortable seating. -Seating towards centre of the restaurant is catered towards tables of 8+ people, while seating on side is for 4 people. -The 4 person tables appear spacious but the 8 person tables appear quite tight next to each other. -Very clean environment in my opinion, more clean than similar restaurants such as Congee Queen. Staff: -Staff are very friendly and assisted to provide recommendations. -Staff members are hustling so huge respect to these workers.
Having been going to their Scarborough location for years, I knew what to expect: great no-fuss Cantonese fare with enough ""wok hei"". I wasn't disappointed. The inside of their new Markham location is spacious and nicely decorated. Service was fast and attentive given how busy it was. Portions ranged from decent to a bit small for the price, but the quality of each dish was high, definitely with enough ""wok hei"". My personal favourite was their spare ribs clay pot rice, had just the right balance of ""crisp"" from the crusting of the rice my favourite part and also ample portions of spare ribs and flavour from that sauce/oil. Their BBQ duck was also super tasty. All in all a great spot for no-fuss Cantonese food.
I used to visit the Mr. Congee in Scarborough in thee past. But now since this one is closer to home, I started coming here. The food is delicious with big portion. The discounted food offered at afternoon tea is amazing, size remains big but just with lower price. Service is not bad. Overall is good and for sure will come back.
Not sure why there are so many bad reviews but they must’ve improved since their opening. The service seems typical of an Asian place- neither good nor bad. The congee is huge for the price, but it tastes just ok. The fish congee tastes very fishy, would not recommend. The Peking duck was ok, but duck is cold and not fragrant. The deep fried squid is pretty good. Beef noodles is just ok, there’s better not it’s not terrible. Afternoon tea starts at 3- pretty late tbh. The ice cream red bean that’s free with afternoon tea is mediocre but they use coconut milk, which is better than some other places. Seating is spacious but only have large tables as others have mentioned. Don’t trust Google to tell you how busy it is- hugely inaccurate as the restaurant is very busy and packed but Google always shows weekend nights as empty
We had a big table of 12 and were able to order a variety of dishes. Food came quickly and tasted great. Not sure why the ratings are low, but I had a good time. The staff was attentive and the restaurant was busy. They have a combination of northern and southern Chinese dishes.
First time at this restaurant. Have not tried their other locations. Bright open space, felt a bit like a food hall. The dishes we ordered were average. The sauce for the lobster noodle didn't seem right. Not sure if we will try again.Food: 3/5
Food is ok. Good portions and presentation. There is MSG in the dishes. Soup was too watery. Lobster dish is pretty good. Grouper fish has no freshness taste. Texture not as firm as like. Quantity good. Perhaps a little bit more side vegetables would look better. Red bean desert is a little bit watery for my taste. But the flavor is good and all there.
Surprised by the low rating for this newly opened and franchised restaurant. Although I did find a long piece of hair in my congee at first scoop. Did find their dishes either a bit on the salty side or too much MSG. Great portion. Spacious and bright environment. Servers were nice. We came for dinner and they still offered us a big table enough for 5 even though it's just the two of us. BBQ pork was ok, not fat enough. The skin didn't match the meat but ok too. Skin was crispy. Congee ... Again I found a hair. But tasty, good texture and good portion. was a bit disappointing, the turnip cake could be more flavourful. The chicken and accompaniment were too salty. But fresh, hot and crispy. Definitely room for improvement throughout, but not bad.
A newly opened Chinese restaurant. Quite disappointed on the food and services. Shrimp and chicken with mango is just warm. Teriyaki cod fish has too much deep fried corn starch covering, too little teriyaki source and absorbed by the starch. I have to dip the fish with soya source as it has no taste. The only good thing is the craypot pork and spare ribs rice. Many people for the dinner and the service is very minimum. When I asked for water refill, the waitress said she didn't speak Cantonese and told me to ask another waitress! Clearly she understood what I wanted but just didn't want to serve. Will I go back? NO!
I've always enjoyed exploring new places to dine so when my friend, @jenltraveltoeat, suggested we go to Mr. Congee after work, it didn't take much arm twisting. This location, in Markham, hasn't been open very long, maybe about a month. It has a bright, very attractive interior with classy furniture and fixtures. They even have private rooms for small groups. Very nice! We ordered from their Afternoon Tea Combo menu - Grilled Squid Skewers, Deep Fried Chicken Wings in Dry Fish Sauce, Fried Chili Turnip Patties, and Fried Rice Noodle w/Beef & Soya Sauce. Everything was good but the squid stood out as our favourite. It was perfectly cooked and very flavourful. Beverages were included so we chose the Fresh Red Bean Freeze with Ice Cream, and Iced Pineapple drink. Both were very refreshing. With their good food, decent prices, very attractive decor, and good service, Mr. Congee is definitely worthy of a return visit!
