I have to say, I really don't get the hype! It was a super long wait for two people both days we went, and we ended up going for an early dinner right at 5pm in order to get seated. I got the bibimbap and my husband got the ramen, and together, we sampled the bao. The food was tasty enough, but: nothing was authentic, the bao was over sauced / overly salty / + soggy, and the bibimbap was not nearly as flavorful as it should be. Service was okay but not great, as it seemed they were understaffed.
Our final meal in Victoria before heading back home. They don’t take reservations so we arrived just before they opened to ensure we get seated. You need to give and pay your order before getting seated so know what you want so many dishes to try! Korean Fried Chicken bibimbap Mei Fun Stir Fry Taiwanese Classic bao Chinese BBQ bao Pork Meatball Banh Mi bao Buttermilk Fried Chicken bao We devoured the delicious food just in time to walk around Chinatown before heading to the ferry to go back to reality.
Presentation looked good with a trendy atmosphere but we ordered take out as it’s easier with kids as we stayed a block away. We found the soup base with the tan tan men and port belly ramen a bit too salty and not the flavour we were looking for. The buns were good but a bit small and on the pricy side at $4/each. We liked the chicken in the bitmap but the pork was all soggy from curry sauce. Not sure if this the same Bao in Vancover which we’ve never been to but just had higher expectations as were a bit disappointed.
LOOK NO FURTHER! This is the best place to eat in China Town, hands down! For starters, hubs and I are in our 40's, parents of teenagers, restaurant owners, and brought our large vacationing family to Bao from other blogger recommendations. We couldn't be happier that we tried it out!! Everything we tried was amazing, the 13 year olds loved theirs as well! Small, quaint, clean, fast, friendly, and absolutely delicious! We can't wait to visit Bao next time we go to Victoria!
My sister and niece couldn’t stop raving about this place so when a buddy from out of town asked if I wanted to meet for lunch I suggested we try it out. We were very impressed! Decided to try 4 different Bao and split them, along with an order of Korean Fried Chicken Bibimbap. We also ordered a couple of Vietnamese Iced Coffees. Everything was delicious! The quality of the ingredients is amazingly fresh and the flavor profiles of each of the different Bao were all delicious and different. We had the Taiwanese. Classic, Chinese BBQ, Pork Meatball Bahn Mi, and the Tonkatsu Chicken Bao. Every one of them was incredibly tasty and the Bao buns were soft and fluffy and so fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and would highly recommend trying them out.
Seating is limited here but the food is absolutely incredible here. The flavours are authentic, creamy and delicious. The baos are spectacular. Giant portions for the ramen and curry. Great experience hereFood: 5/5
Stopped by here for a quick snack - they got a good deal 4 BAO for $16. We tried the fried chicken, pork shoulder, black bean croquette and deep fried Nutella banana. All of the baos were fantastic - fried chicken one was prob my favourite. But overall the best thing was the BAO bun itself.... Soft, warm with just enough elasticity... Delicious!
Bao is an incredible place. Their texture and flavor is so unique, with that amazing soft Bao which pairs perfectly with the fillings options available. Other food options are great, but you just can't leave there without having at least one Bao, you gonna fall in love with it. Service is very friendly and cheerful. It is not a large space so prepare for a bit of waiting at certain times as seating is limited.
I have been here a few times already and it’s a great spot for a really quick meal or snack. There are so many different options you can get when deciding what type of bao you want which is nice when you want to try different flavours! They also have other options like noodle dishes, rice bowls and starters that you can chose from if baos aren’t your thing. I’d recommend the Chinese BBQ Bao, it tastes very similar to Peaking Duck! Also the Mala Crispy Fried Chicken Skin is a must! This is what I ordered. For the Baos I got the Pork Meatball Banh Mi, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Chinese BBQ and Tonkatsu Chicken. I also ordered the Truffle Chashu Ramen and Mala Crispy Fried Chicken Skin!
Great hidden gem. The decor is so cool. The staff are friendly and service is great. The food is delicious and authentic , it is a mix of Asian from East and SouthEast Asia region. The Viet coffee is very authentic; I thought the noodle portion could be a little bigger for someone with a large appetite like myself.
