The Bank of Canada Museum, formerly known as Canada's Currency Museum opened in 1980 on the ground floor of the Bank of Canada building in Ottawa. Temporarily closed in 2013 for major building renovations, the museum reopened in a new space on July 1, 2017 in a new building, with a completely new design and concept. The museum used to be the public face of the National Currency Collection, which contains over 100,000 currency-related artifacts from around the world. These include coins, bank notes, dies, plates, and engraving tools, bank and government ledgers, weights and scales, cash registers, wallets, numismatic medals and cards and examples of counterfeit money. This collection was on display until 2013, and currently most of it is in storage and is not available to visitors. The National Currency Collection also encompasses a library and archive, which contain over 8,500 books, pamphlets, catalogues and journals dating back to the Middle Ages. The Museum offers various educational programs for school groups and the general public, in both English and French.

Great museum for kids to teach them financial literacy at an early age. The museum is very interactive, lots of activities and stations to go to. Great for kids and adults really. Best part it's free. And, once you have taken your kids here, there is a homeless tent right outside where all the lessons can be applied in a real world scenario.
For free admission, this museum is actually very amusing. It is clean and organized. Associates are super friendly. It has lots of cool interactive boards and displays. At the counter they also give you a scavenger hunt page. I found it fun to look for the items inside the museum, got to learn a lot about different Canadian bills and other currencies under British influence.nnThe museum if split into two parts. The front part has reception, gift shop, kids activity area where they can draw and paint, and few interactive displays that teach us about money, credit and economy. Then there’s the hall inside that has a huge display of currencies from every continent influenced by the British. There’s a small theater that plays a short video. Also bunch of cool machinery available for everyone.nnOverall I had a wonderful hour inside the museum. I found some nifty magnets that I bought. Also bought a currency set of Canadian coins and bills that my kid can play with piggy bank at home.
The Bank of Canada Museum in Ottawa is a fantastic spot for families! Not only is it packed with interesting exhibits about Canada’s financial history, but it also has interactive games and activities that make learning fun for kids. The museum provides engaging, hands-on experiences that help children understand money and economics in an accessible way. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic, always ready to help kids explore and answer questions. Plus, with free admission, it’s an excellent outing for families looking to combine fun and education. A must-visit for anyone in Ottawa!
I love that of all the museums in Ottawa, this one is free. They give us a bracelet so we can create an avatar, and then we can interact with the exposition. So things games or some information went over my kids' heads because they haven't learned it yet, but they still loved playing with all the buttons.
Had a great visit this long weekend with 2 1/2 year-old and 13-year-old. Was not sure what to expect, but the admission was free so, no risk to check it out. Very helpful and informative staff upon arrival, lots of interactive games that were more appropriate for the toddler before you enter. Neat option of creating your own avatar using a customized Bracelet that you scan throughout the museum. Would definitely like to come back when I have more time to review all of the facts and details available. We spent almost an hour here.
