The Canadian Museum of History located just across the river from Ottawa in Gatineau is an absolutely spectacular, world-class institution that stands as the most visited museum in Canada, leaving visitors completely in awe of its grand scale and architectural beauty. The entire property is exceptionally nice, beautifully organized, and kept remarkably clean, housed within a stunning, flowing structure designed by Indigenous architect Douglas Cardinal to mimic the sweeping curves of the Canadian landscape. Walking into the building or looking out across its plazas gives you a breathtaking, beautiful view of the Ottawa River and the Parliament buildings directly across the water.nThe jaw-dropping Grand Hall is an absolute triumph and incredibly cool to experience firsthand. As the physical and symbolic heart of the museum, this massive, sunlit space features a soaring wall of windows that highlights the world’s largest indoor collection of monumental totem poles. Walking alongside these towering, masterfully carved Indigenous crest poles—complemented by traditional Pacific Coast house fronts and native artwork—is a profoundly immersive, beautiful, and awe-inspiring moment that perfectly sets the stage for a day of historical discovery.nEqually spectacular is the massive Canadian History Hall, which is profoundly educational and wonderfully engaging to explore. The exhibit flows flawlessly across multiple levels, guiding you through a vibrant timeline of Canada's story from time immemorial to the present day through the eyes of the diverse people who lived it. From ancient tools and beautifully preserved artifacts to interactive multimedia hubs, the layout treats history with a wonderful, vivid energy. Complete with a fantastic, hands-on Children’s Museum right inside, a visit here stands as an absolute triumph that turns a trip through the past into a gorgeous, unforgettable celebration of cultural heritage.

Stopped by at the museum last Friday evening and was genuinely impressed, we got there around 6pm and the Grand Hall with those totem poles just stops you in your tracks. Came in from out of province and wasn't expecting the place to be this massive, we spent almost three hours and still didn't see everything. One of the staff at the front desk gave us a great shortcut through the Canadian History Hall so we didn't miss the good stuff before closing. Parking right by the river with that view of Parliament across the water was honestly worth the trip on its own.

The Canadian Museum of History is absolutely incredible and easily the best museum in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. The architecture of the building itself is stunning, and the Grand Hall with the towering totem poles is breathtaking. The exhibits are very well laid out, offering a deep and honest look into Canada’s history, from the First Peoples to modern times. You could easily spend a whole day here. Make sure to step outside at the back for one of the most amazing views of the Ottawa skyline! Highly recommend!

I came to the museum with my three young kids. They enjoyed walking through the exhibit on northwestern Indigenous communities before heading to the Children's Museum, which was equally loved by the 7yo and the 4yo. Plenty to do and explore without being overstimulating. Then we headed to the Ciné+ to see a couple of the nature documentaries, which had us all completely enthralled. Honestly, it was a fun day that got us out of our routine. My only negative comment was that it took a long time to make out lunch at the museum café, though the staff was very kind and the food was decent once we got it.

The Great Hall features lodges and great totem poles. Progressing further, there is a journey through prehistoric, neolithic, ancient, pre and post colonialist, and modern history. It is very interesting. *Allow a full day - they close PROMPTLY at 5pm except Thursdays. There is lots of place outside to sit and take a break. There is aJapanese zen garden to look at. In the distance I could see a children's play area with interactive things like a boat. Inside, the Children's Museum is delightful! I did not leave enough time. Maybe a three day pass and spreading the visit out so as to go back and see things again like the art installation exhibit would be advisable. Visit! All museums are différent and special.
