The National Gallery of Canada is one of the most impressive places to experience art in Ottawa. Located in a stunning building with unique glass architecture, it creates a sense of space and light, which is inspiring in itself.nnUpon entering, you immediately feel a special atmosphere: silence, respect for art, and a well-thought-out layout. The gallery offers a diverse collection, ranging from classical paintings to modern art. I was amazed at how harmoniously works from different eras and styles coexist.
Visit Monday December 30, 2024. First visit to the National Gallery. Uncertain as to parking as we had walked. Beautiful building, well maintained. Mobility impaired accessible. Free coat check. Retail shop which was well stocked with souvenirs, gifts, and numerous other unique items. Washrooms, elevators and a café offering beverages and light fare. The art collections were well organised. Very much worth a visit.
A lot more to see here than I might have expected...so another tripnis in the plans. Incredible building and setting, and the exhibits I saw were beautifully curated and displayed. The gift shop is not to be missed either! I'm only sorry I waited so long to make the effort to be a tourist in my own country and see this. I definitely want to visit again in a warmer season so I can enjoy the gardens there too. Take note: lots of walking in order to get anywhere within this building and not enough places to sit down for anyone with less than optimal health or mobility concerns.
I was more than happy to see all the expositions. Canadian art in this gallery worth of our attention, I was surprised of the amount of really good works. The building is a total work of art too. Don’t miss the cafeteria, great and affordable lunch with exquisite views!
The National Gallery provided a nice experience. It is clean, quiet, and very well kept. Most of the works of art are nice to see, with some great pieces by The Group of Seven, Monet and even Van Gogh.nnI can't imagine how much money is spent on security, as there was a security guard in almost every single section.nnI primarily went to see The Jack Pine by Tom Tompson, but it was unfortunately put in storage because a crazy protester threw paint on it a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps this is why there is so much security.nnI was able to see the entire gallery in 3 hours, so unless you're really reading every single thing about all the pieces, it's not an entire day trip.nnRestrooms are clean and well kept. Coffee place is decent. Gallery staff is very friendly. A+ to them.nnThere was a feature section on artist Shelley Nero at the time of my visit. I can't imagine how her art made it here, as it's all terrible. This is strictly my opinion, however, as I understand that art is subjective. Either way, if her art can make the National Gallery of Canada, so can yours. Don't give up.nnThere are two contemporary art sections at the time of my visit, and both of those are also terrible. I can't grasp copper wire on the floor being art. Or a literal string going across a room. What a waste of space.nnAnyway, my daughter and I fully enjoyed the visit, and Ottawa is a nice city.
