Popular place in Toronto, so gave it a try. Here's my take:nnService: pleasantnFood: MixednnSteak tartare was light, fresh, nicely seasoned. Simply but well executed. Great call to have it available in appetizer size. The toast that came with it was a hit on its own.nnSwiss train ride: their version of a Croque Madame, left a bit to be desired. While made with quality ingredients, exexution was not any better than a standard dinner. It was simply too dry, but the egg yolk helped with a few bites. The salad it came with also seemed rather hastily thrown together. The potato rosti it came with was crispy and light and was the best part of the dish.nnOverall nice place. Will return to try the burger ans perhaps other dishes.
What a wonderful experience!nWe had a wonderful Monday evening at Union. Coincidentally, wine bottles are also available at half price on Mondays—a very nice offer.nnThe oysters and tataki were excellent. The beef tartare was also outstanding. But our highlight was the steak frites. Incredibly tender and full of flavor.nnWe would also like to highlight the staff. They were extremely friendly and attentive!nnTranslated with DeepL.com free version
Follow @bredgyeats for more food posts!nnWe open up the night with open-faced elk sliders, awakening my slumbering appetite. Served on buttery toasted sesame seed brioche loaf, brandishing a golden-brown sheen that offers a fluffy yet chewy texture with an excellent springback. The elk patties are seared to a light pink center, maintaining a tender texture and bursting with juicy, savory and umami flavours. The pickles on top add a refreshing, crisp and sweet contrast to the savory patty, creating a well-balanced, addictive bite that makes you want more. I made the right choice, opting for the beef tartare main, as it was almost not enough. Incredibly tender and beefy, the bread and butter pickles add a refreshing contrast while hints of horseradish dot the palate with a subtle warmth. On the side, a side of whole dijon mustard and habanero salsa offers a customizable, extra layer of flavour. The butter sourdough bread was also transcendent, adding richness and crispiness to each bite. The salad was also nothing short of indulgent - double-smoked bacon, lettuce, chervil cheese and a golden-brown rosti all brought together with a mildly sweet vinaigrette. With some tough competition, the sticky BBQ pork ribs held their own until some slight encouragement slid the tender meat off the bone. With a subdued sweet edge and robust savoriness, the BBQ glaze is perfumed with hints of caramelized apples and cinnamon that bring a unique depth to the dish. With the overall experience at stake, the Sticky Ginger Cake swoops in for everyone’s sake. Soft and spongy, the ginger-perfumed, porous interior soaks up the salted caramel syrup, which has a rich and deep caramelized flavour with a nuanced bitterness, stopping just short of being burnt - just how I like it. The vanilla ice cream tones down the sweetness, creating the perfect balance with the cold, creamy ice cream - contrasting the warm cake, creating an interesting temperature gradient that’s paradoxically heartwarming but breezeful, like a cross from summer to winter in one bite.
Great service, good food in a cozy dining room is what you get at Union.nnExcellent selection of local beer and a creative cocktail selection including a very good Manhattan pair well with a tight but varied menu.nnThe bratwurst was one of the best sausages I’ve ever had … the gnocchi was good, not great and the polenta was a confusing chili jam? but mostly satisfying dish that could have been much better if the polenta itself was less gritty and more on the creamy side.nnOverall a nice dining experience with top notch service.
Very cute brunch spot. They have a nice patio space in the back especially when the weather is nice. We ordered the Union Breakfast Sandwich and the Union Burger. I preferred the latter. Service was excellent and I loved the decor and atmosphere inside and out. They have an open kitchen where you can see the chefs preparing your meal and they also have a small bar inside the restaurant. I would definitely come back.
