Traverse City State Park

Story

Traverse City State Park, officially Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park, is a 47acre state park in Traverse City, Michigan. The park is located on the southern shoreline of East Grand Traverse Bay, a bay of Lake Michigan, and is used mainly as a campground. US-31/M-72 runs between the park proper and a beach area; there is an overpass by way of which campers can get to the beach. The beach area has a playground, grills and picnic tables. The camping area has around 350 campsites, all with electricity. Other features include a dump and fill station, three bathroom buildings, and a recycling/trash center. To the south the park adjoins the TART Trail, a 10.5-mile bicycle trail that runs through Traverse City.On July 21, 2011, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission augmented the name of the park with that of Keith J. Charters, a local conservationist, hunter and angler who served on the commission from 1994 to 2010. While signs at the park's entrance have added the new name, it is still usually referred to as "Traverse City State Park."

Noisier than many campgrounds and not a great camping retreat as it is right on busy US 31. However, the location makes it easy and inexpensive to explore the traverse city area. If you're there for more for TC & sight seeing and less for a traditional camping experience, it's great!

I always enjoy coming back to Mich to visit family. We visited the kids museum across from the Bay, seeing EVERYTHING under snow n ice is so beautiful

Great city park. The beach is well kept with sturdy play ground equipment. I've never been to the camp ground but it seems nice even has a connection to the tart trail.

This is a great location for access to all TC and the bay area have to offer. Nice walking bridge over the road to the bay and a very nice shower house on the east end. Most of the sites are good sized too. The down side is that it is between a busy highway and an airport/Coast Guard station, so kind of noisy with air and ground traffic. Also, here in October, there is no ice or firewood available at the park. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
