Reviews
This review is more of a question/commentary to the owners with some background. My parents have been shopping at the old location for decades. They loved it. They only heard about the move to St-Jacques just before it happened and with their limited mobility they will not be going very often. They also complained that the choice of products is not was it used to be. Understood that this move does not seem to be by choice, but to get the customers on your side why did you not post about it all over the store for the year you knew this was happening? My parents said nothing was posted until the very end but they saw signs on st Jacques for months prior. It seems per many reviews that this forced move was not properly communicated to the client base. I had even emailed you about and got no response. I'm seeing reviews all about the bad choice it was to move, but it seems you are now in damage control mode. If you had foreseen how your customer base would react you should have tried to mitigate this by better communication and explaining the situation well before it happened. Why was this not done? Hopefully you will be able to build a new customer base. Either that or try to get back to a populated NDG storefront rather than a busy urban boulevard. Wishing all the best luck...
Where is everything? It's one thing to have to move but another to "move" and reopen and be a completely different store. It's like night and day. I really hope they're working on bringing back the selection and charm the other store had. We came for a bite to eat, nuts, baklava and feta and were only able to leave with feta. RIP Akhavan.
Loved the old location on Sherbrooke. So easy to get to by car or by foot and useful for the area to have. Now the new location is far away from foot traffic and the parking is awkward at best. Why have the sections separated in different buildings? I used to love coming here, but it seems the new move is a step backwards. :
A former employee was a good friend of mine. I used to be a client. This is a dishonest business. Products are rarely fresh. The quality of meat used to make kabobs is questionable, so are certain expiry dates on products. Very unfortunate. There are more authentic, less commercial and more honest stores where you can buy your Persian products.
I really think these negative reviews from questionable, "local guides" are completely fake. I have been a customer of Akhavan for years. Anyone who tries to say there is a problem with the freshness or quality of their meats, fruits or vegetables has never been in their store. The meats are amazing! Everything is fresh, except for the dried nuts, but how can you have fresh, dried nuts? I drive past two other grocery stores to go there because of the quality and because of the great staff. Yes the move was unfortunate, but necessary, and no one likes change. it's still the best store in NDG CSL. Todd P.S. please note my correct use of, "there and their", very proud of myself.
The shops is spacious and easy to find what you need. The selection of products are great if you are a bit daring I can't usually read what's written on the packaging.... Iove shopping there.
Best new product is their homemade sangak bread I give the store 5 stars for that purpose.. When it comes to the store selection and restaurant though.. I prefer how it was before it moved locations… Recently I’ve been multiple times and the restaurant chicken wrap was made in old arabic pita bread with dry recooked chicken it would’ve been far nicer in their own fresh bread and juicier chicken.
Its a shame, you cant sit at the restaurant anymore at all. That was a part of the charm. Very sad about the change of location, It made NDG better. It seems that the price of the food at the restaurant has slowly gone up while the quality has slowly gone down compare to how it was many years ago.
The new location is actually closer to where I live compared to the old location but I find it awkward that the new location is separated with 3 sections & entrances, so when it's very rainy or snowy it would be more tedious to go each of the sections because you will be forced to go outside. I think they should occupy the whole building make it fully accessible inside, having the general grocery section to the vacant bath store space. Their stock could be better. It's pretty accessible if you take the STM busses 90 & 104, but if you come from the East beware of the Saint-Jacques traffic.
Akhavan used to have delicious home made salads. We just bought hummus, tabouli, and vine leaves. They were absolutely terrible, totally inedible. Hoped to have them for dinner but instead tossed them in the garbage. How disappointing. $15 wasted.
