Sunshine Restaurant

The taste can definitely be better. The problem is too much salt. The prices are very affordable. If you want a sit-down dinner before going to the library or to Station Square, this is the place. There is a hot pot place next to this place if you really want a different choice.

Dishes are tasteless, foods were overpriced and pretentious, you can hear microwave beeping constantly. Pork is dry and rigid like a sponge, soup is more like hot water. The “Railway-Braised Pork Chop Rice” I ordered was tasteless. Indeed it’s railway-like, I felt like I was eating rocks on the railroad. Side dishes were barely acceptable but was way overpriced, there are only 5 pieces of beef tendon while it costs $5.5, are you freaking kidding? The meal was barely enough for a high school girl, while it costs well above $10. 0/10 hope it closes down soon.

A cozy eatery that has lost its way. With the decreasing number of authentic Taiwanese-style restaurant in Burnaby, I find myself frequenting Sunshine Cafe these days. I had long been a patron since '99 and I feel sad to report that that the quality had gone down the point where I feel hesitate to spend anymore money for their food. I had the fried pork steak combo and the pork came with only superficial flavor of black pepper and salt on the batter. No flavor penetrated the the batter and the pork chop itself is a rigid, dry piece of protein. I can't say that I have tasted a worse Taiwanese fried pork chop in my life. Looking into the kitchen, everything then made sense. Instead of the familiar mom & pop combo, I saw two younger chefs whom I did not recognize. They really butchered this well-known Taiwanese-style dish beyond all recognition. The disappointment reminded me of the time when I visited the neighborhood Wen Xin Chinese Restaurant where they completely butchered the "Salty crispy chicken". Both had the appearance of the Taiwanese delicacy and none of the taste. I sincerely hope that the mom & pop at Sunshine Cafe can transfer the know-hows to these less-experienced chefs or we will yet see another Taiwanese restaurant bite the dust soon. Stir fried noodle was also sampled, and those lacked in taste as well.

Such a bad hot pot. The soup is just clear hot water. I ordered lamb and it came with one bite of lamb and the rest is a strange mix of tofu, pork blood, intestine, one shrimp, one fish ball, one mussel?? Like they just throw all the leftovers into the bowl. Worst hotpot of my life. I wish I just ate instant noodles instead.
