Ryu Izakaya brings good vibes and a great place to have drinks with friends, but do not expect their food to blow you away. Parking directly in front of the restaurant is difficult at peak hours. The shrimp udon was the favourite at our table from what we ordered. Everything was tasty, and portions were not stingy by any means. The food was solid but none of the dishes we ordered were super innovative. The drinks arrived quicky and tasted very nice - not too sweet. The cocktails ordered were not super fancy and we're quite simple, but for the pricing that is expected. The service was extremely attentive and friendly. We did not have to wait long for the food and drinks to arrive, and someone was always ready to refill our water and clear dishes. Overall, I would come again mainly for the drinks but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here as I find the food lacks value.
Ryu Izakaya is a much needed addition to the area. Good food at reasonable prices in a nice well lit venue. I attended the soft opening and found them to be pretty well organized and enjoyed their menu. The crispy shrimp was one of my faves. I'd recommend to pass by at least once! I also liked how chewy their udon was :3
Waited for a long time for an izakaya of this calibre to come to Markham. Located where the old fox and the fiddle bar was, they gave this place an amazing Reno. This restaurant is very well designed and decorated and it's a very relaxed environment and very spacious. It was well staffed and had good vibes. Staff was attentive and food came out relatively quickly. Food wise, I was VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality and options. 5/5 stars for food. Good selection of wine, sake, soju and beers. On Tuesday and Wednesdays they also offer $1 oysters as well. Highly recommend trying this place!
My fiancé booked a reservation for our 7 year anniversary and we were both really excited to come and try their food as we love Izakaya, but we ended up being disappointed almost instantly. They told us they only had a bar seat available despite us booking IN ADVANCE and proceeds to put us all the way in the corner where there was not a lot of space and basically shafted from everything. When we asked if we could switch over to a table, they said they had other reservations coming in and couldn’t give it to us and that they usually seat tables of 2 or 3 at the bar. However, we saw a few tables of 2 get a table seat throughout the entire time we were there. The food was mediocre at best and definitely not worth the price. My favourite thing was probably the soft shell crab but even then it was mediocre. The service was also pretty awful. The server at the bar who took our order looked so miserable the whole time. They never even bothered to refill our water, even when we put our EMPTY cups basically in front of them. We quickly finished up and left. I’m so disappointed cause it kind of ruined our anniversary dinner. I would rather take the time and make the trip to Nome Izakaya instead, their food and service is much better. Safe to say I won’t be coming back here and wouldn’t really recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Wonderful dining experience at Ryu Izakaya last night. Ambience and decor was excellent. Food quality was solid. Beef tartare and Karaage were good. Sushi rolls were beautiful, though they could have been pressed better and a bit pricey for what it's worth. The standouts for us were the Ryu Sliders comes in a trio and the buck-a-shuck special only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, serving fresh East and West Coast oysters. Recommend for a date night or a fun night out with a small group of friends. Would return for more oysters and sliders for sure!
Had a wonderful time last night at the new Ryu Izakaya - it’s a great addition to the plaza and offers a selection of aesthetically pleasing/creative cocktails and delicious shareable food items you’d expect to find at a proper Japanese Izakaya. The interior decor was definitely impressive and the vibe was perfect. We were well taken care of by our attentive bartenders and I am looking forward to my next visit!
Rating: 3.5/5. The $1 oysters on Tuesdays & Wednesdays are a great deal. You can order as many dozens but only 2 dozens at a time. The food was good but pricey considering the portion size. The ambience is nice and service was okay.
Visited Ryu Izakaya for the first time and it did not disappoint! We went on a Tuesday and ordered buck a shuck oysters, sushi, sliders, and a few other items. Everything was super delicious, specifically the hidden leaf We ordered a few cocktails as well which were super yummy and super reasonably priced as well. I will definitely be coming back here!
Not too bad from an atmosphere perspective, the interior design is simple and clean. If you’re here for the food, it won’t necessarily “blow you away” however it is still good. Slight gripe with how pricey everything is. Cant say much but suggest if you’re a first timer would recommend you try it, get it crossed off your list and over with.
Went to check out what the hype is all about, so here is what we think… We got Chase the Dragon, Spyder Crab Roll, Torched Black Dragon not pictured, Ryu Sliders, Mentaiko Shrimp Udon, Ika Yaki, Truffle Fries, and East Coast Oysters. Their Rolls were very disappointing, they were all so soggy, mushy, flavourless even when drenched in sauce, the quality was like AYCE quality, not to mention it took an hour to arrive… Ryu Sliders were delicious, the juicy Beef Patties had crispy smashed edges, we enjoyed it a lot! Mentaiko Shrimp Udon came with 4 Shrimps on a creamy Mentaiko Mushroom Sauce with chewy Udon, it was bomb! Ika Yaki came in 2 decently sized Squid, it had a smokey taste to it, and it was fresh! Truffle Fries was okay, it was actually Fries with Truffle Mayo, and the Mayo portion was tiny… The Oysters were OK, the sizes were waaay too small for $3 a piece… Overall, Hot dishes were delicious, but anything else was below average, service was extremely slow, and our server never checked up on us in the span of 2.5 hrs…
