Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

Story

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is an astronomical observatory located near the hamlet of Priddis, Alberta, Canada, about 25km southwest of Calgary. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of Calgary, and was dedicated in 1972. The facility is used for research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and public outreach. Research performed at the RAO included a variable star search program, follow-up observations of variable star discoveries, and detailed investigation of binary stars. An outstanding minor planet search program was also performed with comet discoveries by Rob Cardinal. The RAO now participates in many follow-up observation programs, including the Quark Nova project.

Although we have driven past the Observatory countless times, and have seen it from the nearby Anne and Sandy Cross Conservancy, we had never taken the time to attend an event. But encouraged by friends who did, we set out to participate in one of their "Milky Way" events. We found they site well organized for this type of event, and there were lots of staff and volunteers (all friendly and clearly dedicated) about to help things run smoothly. It was suggested to go early to get parking closer to the buildings, but on leaving, we noticed the overflow parking wasn't really that far to walk if you come later. Although there were lineups, it didn't take us that long to check out a couple of the big telescopes and see what they were looking at, as well as to visit with the group of amateur astronomers who had set up their personal telescopes, and taken a peek through them. Decent washrooms were in the nicely done Visitor Centre, along with computers for the kids to use, information displays and experts. It was a free event, but donations welcome. All in all, a great evening!

I've only ever gone as part of a volunteer event but it's lots of fun! The staff are knowledgeable. My event including children and they found activities to interest them and encourage questions/curiosity. There's a lot to see and it's definitely infotmative.

Got to look through the telescope, really cool to be able to see galaxies that are light years away through the high powered telescope.

My boyfriend and I attended a Milky Way Night, and despite the surprisingly cold August evening, it was so worth it. It was so spectacular to view distant nebulas and galaxies from all the telescopes that were set up. We spoke with some very friendly and knowledgeable people about what we were looking at through their telescope. We will definitely be going back!
