About

For nearly 8,000 years people have been gathering here to build community. Fort Calgary tells the stories of the cultures that have shaped us. Here, we reflect on our past, understand our present & create our future. #MakeHistory

Story

When you visit Fort Calgary, you stand on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot and the people of Treaty 7, including the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai; the Tsuut’ina; and the Bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley Nations of the Stoney-Nakoda. This land is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

This is where the North West Mounted Police arrived in 1875 and built the Fort which became the foundation for the city of Calgary. In just under 150 years, Calgary grew from a tiny outpost to a city of over 1.5 million people. It is where diverse worldviews collided, forever changing the people and the place.

Our interpretive center is open every day 9 AM-5 PM, except New Year's Day, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve.

I went back in late March 2024. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They offered a free walking tour on queer history in Calgary which I found very informative. The museum itself inside might look small but I spent over two hours there and only left because it was closed. They have a very detailed account of the history of Calgary including the history of East Asian immigrants in the city. It is very detailed.nnThe main downside for me is the fact that the place does not have clear signage. They have a popcorn place there that doesn't make it explicit popcorn is paid. Further, you cannot go in the museu with the popcorn even there is no sign stating this. It also feels like sometimes the staff would rather be anywhere else rather than talking to you relatable and they seemed quite surprised we wanted to visit when we were buying tickets.nnI was in Calgary only for a weekend so I'm glad they had a place like this. Highly recommend if you are in the city and interested and learning more about its history
Not busy so we got a private tour with a knowledgeable guide. There was too much inside to take in all at once, need to pace yourself. There is a fee to enter and another fee for tour. I felt it was worth it.
Informative and very well organized. Definitely worth a visit when in Calgary! Our kids learned a lot and had a great time at the same time.
We went to the Canada Day celebration and it was surprisingly good!nThe grass area and grounds were a bit soft and soggy because of the rainy weather the day before but nothing that was particularly unpleasant.nWashrooms were clean and lots of security. The event was well organized and fireworks were really well-done!
I just recently visited for the first time for a corporate function. The building is beautiful and in great shape, especially when you consider it was built in the 1800s.nnThere are many historical items on display and information on the history of this area. Glad I took the time to arrive early for my event to look around.
