It's wonderful that a dark sky park exists in the area. I came down on a clear weekday night and it was very crowded. There is not enough parking. Some people don't respect the requests by the signs and the staff to be respectfully quiet. Some people were so loud that I ended up leaving earlier than I wanted. However, the NASA staff is wonderful, providing several telescopes with which to see the night sky. There is plenty of room to spread out to look at the stars. And, there is a building that has bathrooms and a gift shop. Overall, a nice place to see the stars.
Incredible experience! We visited during the day and the setting was spectacular and serene. We went back that night to star gaze, it's really cool when you see a shooting star and hear the crowd ooh and ahh! The facility is clean and they offer refreshments and snacks at a very reasonable price but you can also bring your own snacks. Sometimes they have lectures in their auditorium where they have surround screens showing the night sky. Some people share their telescopes for anyone to look through. A must see!
Found out about this place super last minute before leaving to U.P. for sure feel like I could of been more prepared but seemed like really cool stop. Wasn't to busy when I went and that may have been because it was a little cloudy. We went during the end of sunset then again late at night but once night hits you really don't want to be using you phone because the white lights are prohibited.
Wonderful experience for myself and my boys. The sunset was gorgeous. The gift shop was small but cute. When we went a guy had 2 telescopes set up so we could see the craters on the moon. My boys loved that. Unfortunately my boys got tired before we could see much more. Definitely will return when back in area. Take a red flashlight. No white light allowed. Plan for it to be chilly since on water. Glad we had jackets. Take bug spray.
We visit this place when the moon is 99% day after of the supermoon so it wasn’t a good night for stars watching. Even though we were able to see a lot of stars and international space station with naked eyes. They set up two giant telescopes and showed us some other stars and comets too. It’s definitely worth to drive 13 hours from NYC! For the people who come from different places; don’t forget sunset time is and climate different than your hometown. Go there on time before parking spaces are full and get some extra jacket or something. You may need bug spray too. They don’t allow any kind of white light source, so having red light is a good idea. We took coffee and some snacks with us because it’s a long night. There is a restroom available 24/7. And the young man who works there as an astronomer is very friendly and knowledgeable.
If you visit here, check to see when the moon sets before you go so that it won't compete with the stars of the night sky. Be sure to take a red light with you since white light is banned from the park. The walkways are illuminated by red lights. Easy to get around, but I would not take the trail to the water except during the daylight hours. Everything else is paved. There is a bathroom which is great. One of the few places where you can see the Milky Way. Posted photos were before sunset, as I can't really photograph the Milky Way, unfortunately.
Amazing sunset and moonrise. Unfortunately the full moon did make it a bit hard to see the stars. Large telescope was set up to view the moon and interesting stars. Relax and bring chairs or a blanket to sit on.
We went here to watch the sunset and stay for the stars. Even on a cloudy day, this place did not disappoint! So beautiful and peaceful. The covered viewing area and walking path was nice. Also, the public bathroom was clean and very comfortable.
Made my first trip here, certainly will not be my last. It was a wonderful star-gazing experience! Being a city kid, I wasn't prepared for the amount of mosquitos I would encounter! Which kept me running back to my car every few minutes lol. Other than that everything was wonderful. Bathrooms were clean, plenty of parking, plenty of space for seating. Can't wait to go back!
We absolutely enjoyed our visit here. Sorry we were unable to see the northern lights….full moon did not help. The sky was still amazing! Definitely plan another trip there…but with better planning and timing.
