About

Blend of classical German and contemporary European cuisine

Story

Bauhaus sets a new standard for refined dining in Vancouver. Owned by German film director Uwe Boll, the award-winning restaurant is known for its modern take on German cuisine and exceptional service. The fresh and nuanced flavours of the dishes are built on the philosophy of transforming classic German cuisine into a contemporary form.

Located in Gastown, the restaurant is housed inside one of Vancouver’s most unique historic buildings, The Boulder Hotel, which was originally built in 1890. Over the last 100 years, the building has gone through many changes, from its early days as a saloon, to a bank, and, finally, a hotel. Led by Vancouver designer Andrea Greenway, we have designed the restaurant to work within this historic space, featuring a dining room, a large lounge area, and an open-concept kitchen.

This is a great modern German restaurant in Gastown. I heard great things about their Wiener Schnitzel and went here specifically to try it out. The ambiance is very open and inviting. The German beer selection is very good. They were able to accommodate my food allergies quite easily. The chef even sent out a complimentary small appetizer. It was very tasty. The Wiener Schnitzel was excellent. The sorbet was a great choice as a dessert. I definitely recommend this place!!

Recommend going for its tasting menu. It has a 4 course option and a more dynamic 6 course one. Creative menu, each dishes with a guaranteed range of flavours, and intriguing combination that creates a nice craving and a lingering finish. The wine pairing is creative as well, using hard to trod upon Romanian and Italian wines. The wine lovers should try; while those with a particular palate may want to order a la carte bottle. Fresh ingredients, creative composition, attentive staffs, nice ambience - we would come back again!

We had high expectations going in. The room is lovely and nicely designed with great soft lighting. We ordered buttermilk Margareta for starters- which turned out to be brilliant. That’s where things changed. Between the four of us, one had the four-course tasting menu with the rest of us ordering la cart. While visually pleasing, the tasting menu has small portions, with cuts of meat that were tough and grisly and left one hungry. The schnitzel was mediocre and overpriced. I recall having better schnitzel on a train in Poland. The food was loveless, and the service was robotic and spotty- as loveless as the food itself. For what it was, the menu seemed to be overpriced. There was nothing in our experience at Bauhaus that would make us want to return.

A wonderful dining experience in a contemporary designed restaurant. Upscale without the pretentiousness. Since it was my first dining experience, I wanted to try a little bit of everything: scallops, gnocchi and a few sides (Brussels sprouts, cheese spätzle, and seared mushrooms). I would have been happy with the sides, alone. If you’ve never tried spätzle, you must! The owner went around the tables and personally welcomed us, which was a nice touch.
