A unique experience. You don't have to travel to Paris to see unique places or Egypt for pyramids if you're looking for a historical place. Correct, this place may not be historical literally but for us who are traveling extremely fast in technology, this place provides you with items and pieces you will never find probably starting in next few years. We bought items probably not worth the price but definitely worth the memories. I hope they do not close this place although we may not see it again unless another trip to Toronto.
I am a guitar pedal tinkering, amplifier modding, coffee roaster building, espresso machine technician that has every respect for what a mess these stores can be. Also more respect for the ones with unique components that may not have seen before. The guy at the counter has an encyclopedic knowledge of everything in the store and is one of the finest examples of under appreciated wisdom in the universe. Love this place!
This is a goldmine of electronics components if you know what you are looking for. Best for DIY projects because you most certainly will find almost everything you are looking for, maybe even more if you are lucky. Found a 2014 Nvidia quadro GPU and a plastic 35mm point and shoot film camera. The list goes on. Also make sure you have a face mask handy with you if you are planning on entering the store, which you should!
A-1 earned this one star review. I won't go there again. I took the time to email them & ask about cables & nine boxes of old computer parts. They replied interested. I drove the cables & first of eight boxes at the cost of my time. I wanted to buy surplus test gear & might have traded or given my parts away. They were outright rude. Would not let me in, told me everyone was on lunch at 3pm, wouldn't look in the computer parts box because keyboards on top & treated me like I was a waste of their time. Not interested? Fine. Tell prospects that. But dont tell people you are interested then be rude & disrespectful when they take time out to try to be a customer. A thoroughly negative customer experience. Boy I miss the old queen st electronics surplus stores.
You will find ANY electronic part here dated back until their inventions. Just search long enough... or ask the owner, usually there on weekdays
HEADS UP: You need proof of vaccination to enter the store. And that's totally fine. Except...there's no way of knowing you need it – no warning on their website, or even a sign posted on their locked front door. So, when you knock on the door, a surly little man barks for your vaccine papers. He then informs you that you are being watched by the owner of the store through security cameras. He then reasons that you should have called first to find out about the need for vaccination proof that exists only here and at no other store I've been to in the last 2 years of this pandemic. So...yeah...my bad? Honestly, this store has never been a friendly or helpful place so this kind of behaviour is not surprising. But hopefully this review helps others know how to prepare before embarking on their own harrowing shopping experience at A1 Electronics Parts.
If you need some old tech, this is the place to go. Prices are good and honestly the owner is quite funny although I see how some can see it come across rude. Have been there multiple times and haven't had any issues so far. Miss the days with Active Surplus but at least this still exists.
The only place in the GTA for so many of your electronic needs. An absolute asset and gem in Toronto. I haven't been here in maybe 2 years, but was just reading that they were requiring a proof of vaccine to enter. Absolutely disgusting.
November 25, 2021 Thursday morning 9.03am I got to the store! I had my mask on. At the door mean woman with no mask on her face blocked me at the door! I asked her if I can get inside, she requested proof of vaccine I showed to her through the glass door on my phone! She said wait and went inside store, I guess to find her mask. I waited for a good 5 mins she didn’t show up..then I left. Thank you for keeping us safe!!!!!!
Amazing store, has all the electronics i need for my projects, everything from oscilloscopes to vacuum tubes, they have it. However, if you are looking for something similar to Creatron .Inc this isn't the place, A1 electronics is better suited for makers and people looking to build or repair something, or who need equipment. Store has many isles and it isn't an exaggeration to say there stock consists of hundreds of thousands of assorted components and equipment placed in a semi-organised fashion. Finding what you need may be difficult, so make sure to plan to be in the store for almost an hour, which honestly isn't a bad thing as its one of the only large surplus electronic stores left in the GTA. Overall I never had a bad visit and always left with what I needed and a little more. Despite what some people may say about the older gentleman who owns and works there, he is very nice and is always a pleasure to interact with. There is no other store like this in the world and A1 is truly one of a kind.
