After being closed for over a year, Yopo re-opened under new management. The new chef Rickie is a perfectionist. Mandy at the till told me that he is extremely particular about using all the best ingredients, insisting that those who can tell the difference will be able to tell the distinguished taste. Case in point, my friend usually don't take any spices, but had been looking for really good curry powder without success. After ditching all the curry powders, she tasted the Singapore vermicelli and I've never seen her eat so much food at one lunch. It was a truly amazing feat for Rickie to make the mixed vegetable and noodle dishes that coaxed my fried to eat so much. Well, chef Rickie's commitment to quality ingredients explains why the Sweet Mandarin menu pricing is now higher than Yopo. But nowadays, it is still less pricy and more healthy than sushi take out! So far, I've tried beef and broccoli and braised tofu with vegetables. I was impressed with the variety of vegetables used in the Braised tofu dish – more like a vegetarian feast version. Their stir-fry is not as greasy as the Grand Chinese on the next street. I definitely prefer their Singapore vermicelli, the noodles are thicker, more firm, and does not break up easily. I tried the house-made traditional BBQ duck, it is served boneless – LOTS of duck meat – too much meat for just me. The mixed vegetable dish is going to be my regular item. The deep fried chicken wings appetizer I used to order is now double the price, and aaarg – didn't like the fact that it is tossed in onions and chilly – I prefer the previous version. I find Mandy very friendly and accommodating and courteous. I'm happy that have re-opened.
Singaporean curry noodles! Great portion, friendly service
Absolutely horrible. We used to go here all the time and it was a great place to go, tasetwise. Just went today and ordered the spicy squid, honey garlic spareribs and beef and green beans. The spicy squid used to be absolutely delicious here, but not anymore. The batter is horrible, very greasy and thick, not light and crispy as before. The spareribs were not crispy at all and tasted like poor quality meat. The beef dish was probably the best, but even so, not great in flavour. Cooked fine and it wasn't tough or chewy, but a little salty, the green beans in the dish was the best part of the meal. There are new owners now, so different recipes I guess. Anyway, very very disappointing and won't be going back.
When I was younger this was my go to place for take out. Today I drove by and saw it hidden between stores and wanted to see if it was as good as I remembered, it was. I ordered the black bean beef on rice with a hint of spice added and the beef was perfectly cooked and tender, and a fair portion for its price. My mom ordered fried flat noodles with beef. Her portion was oversized so we had some to go, but it was cooked and prepared flawlessly with amazing flavour. It's not nostalgia that makes it taste good, but definetly the chefs that work here. 5/5, definetly starting to come here again instead of going to other choices downtown. Truly a hidden gem!
At least 10 delivery driver waiting inside for their orders in a tiny space. There is no social distancing at all. Absolutely covid-19 rules are not followed by restaurant
Absolutely delicious. Best veggie fried rice I've ever had. Ask for the chilli oil, which they also sell.
Tiny yet cozy when it's not busy Chinese restaurant. There are literally only 5 or 6 tables and you might end up having to share your table with others. They don't serve any tea unless you buy it. Newspapers are available for solo dining. I like coming here when I need a breather and having a late lunch. They deliver but only during a small window during the evening.
Amaing chow mein! It's the very best I have ever had. I am not a fan of chow mein at any other place but this one. Very crispy noodles and they make them in house! They deliver too! Happy repeat customer.
Thank you! Great food and friendly fast service. See you again soon!
Very good food, fast service, friendly staff and cheap! Couldn't ask for better.
