Went on a weekend afternoon and there was no line. Ordered a Saboten set and the food was served quickly. Staff were polite and efficient in their work. The katsu was crunchy on the outside and the pork and chicken was still moist inside. The panko crust did fall off the chicken and the pork after one bite, so it wasn't perfect. The various sauces and seasonings were great for the dish, but there was no explanation as to which sauce was for which part of the set. That would have been nice. Yes, there was a fair amount of rice, but it tastes great with the seasoning so even if it's more than what's necessary, it's still good.
I’m surprised by the really low reviews of this spot. When it first opened the lines were very long.. but that is no longer a problem. They now have very quick service. I had the set and I was happy with all 3 proteins. I was a bit confused about which sauce was for which thing, but at least there are options in case you don’t like one. It’s a pretty cool food court option and definitely worth a try.
Saboten offers mainly Japanese style Deep fried Croquettes, Pork cutlets, breaded prawns served with rice and Miso soup. It's filling and the price is very reasonable. They just need to serve sauce with the cutlets, sort of oyster sauce or okonomiyaki sauce type The shop is super clean and staff are very polite and friendly.
Not even one star. How come they sale like this... Each dish has Poor amount with $19 +tips.. Miso soup was cold. They didn't give us sauce first time . I want to another restaurant after I ate this . feel like just had a snack .
Located in the new Brentwood food court, you order on a touch screen monitor at the front. Tried the Saboten set and shrimp curry. The curry was good and they had big pieces is shrimp. Lot of rice which I suppose is good with the curry sauce but dishes seem a bit over priced for food court with minimal service interaction.
I ordered the tenderloin curry combo today. Efficient ordering system where you can order in person or use their computer screen to skip the line. The tenderloin meat was very juicy and breaded nicely. Not overly oily. The only downside was that it was tiny!! I would have ordered a side of meat if I had known. The curry sauce was disappointing. It tasted watered down and it was not as thick as I would have liked it. I cook my own Japanese curry at home and the curry cubes you buy from the store and heat up are so much better than the curry that was served at saboten today. The combo comes with pieces of pickled cucumber but again super tiny!!! Like four tiny pieces for four tiny pieces of tenderloin? Lol I wouldn't order the curry again but I'm interested in trying out other items on the menu.
We were there 7pm on Tuesday, so unfortunately the tender loin, loin, and Saboten sets were all sold out. In fact, we ordered the last chicken set so I guess if you want to try out this place, better come early. There was no line up as I was the only customer. While I have to wait about 5 min for my meal, I see it's freshly made. The chicken was moist while the crumb is crispy and not greasy. Perfect portion with rice and miso too. The price is a bit steep for food court but I have no problem with that as the quality is excellent. Will try to get some port next time.
... You can tell how bad it is from the photo. Only 3 pieces and each piece was not big at all and too much rice compared to pork katsu. How can you sell this for such a high price?? Rather, Saku in Downtown location is better than this. This is just not right!
I find it decent, but I agree with other reviews about portion of pork cutlet. *HERE IS THE TIP FOR CUSTOMERS* if it's two of you trying to have a meal from Saboten, try one loin set and one loin as a side. Only difference between the set and the side is, they give you a cutlet, cabbage salad and sauce but no rice, no miso soup, and so pickled cucumber. Since Saboten gives you too much rice, you and your friend can split the rice in half and have a meal around 21 dollars as total for two. Worked for me.
Poor pork quality, poor shrimp quality, I think both pork and shrimp were cooked before deep fried. , rice were served cold, all food size have shrunk. The shop is going down Hill. So sad ! This shop in Richmond used to be be good. Now so bad, do not go.
