Kaneko Hannosuke
"Kaneko Hannosuke is a popular Japanese tendon tempura restaurant known for its rice bowls topped with tempura such as conger eel, shrimp, squid, and a soft-boiled egg. They pride themselves on using fresh ingredients and all bowls are made to order. They are an international tempura chain that is famous for authentic Japanese tendon and tempura, with this location in Brentwood, Burnaby, BC being their second branch in British Columbia, Canada. Kaneko Hannosuke served as the second chairman of the Japanese cooking association "Isshin-kai". Kaneko Shinya, Hannosuke's grandson, inherited a recipe book named "Enma-Cho" as a child. After numerous trials and tests, he finally created the signature TENDON, a rice bowl with tempuras on it."

Although it look nice. The batter on the "premium eel" is especially thick and not cooked through. Soggy and doughy in the middle, with very thin slice of eel. I can only taste the dough. And because the temperature is not right, the dough and batter actually retain a lot of oil and made it very heavy and oily. The kitchen hood for the frying station can also be better and stronger as the oily air is dispersed faraway when we are waiting for 30 min from the table. The only bright side is the sauce on the rice.
It is nice that the food court experience becomes more pleasurable with better cutlery, packaging, etc. Take-out packaging of the Special Tempura Bowl at Kaneko Hannosuke surprised me in a good way, as it is immaculate. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the meal for me. Food-wise, egg tempura was great; I can't say I've tried anything like that before. But everything else was very mediocre and unmemorable. It is a bunch of deep-fried items and plain rice, making a pretty dry combination. It was missing some binding element, maybe a sauce or something, and provided soy sauce wasn't enough, at least for my liking.
The food of course is as good as their first location in Vancouver which has already closed down a few weeks ago. We always order their premium tempura and it never disappoints. There is no table service here as it's in the mall's food court. The food court on the other hand is clean and new. Looks like an airport lounge somewhere. Their take out boxes looks decent and nice. It is still my favorite place for tempura rice.
Pretty similar to their sit-down location but with the convenience of being in a food court. So while prices are high given that there's no table service, the food is still of good quality. Tried the oyster tendon and the premium tendon with eel. It's not fast food as you have to wait for your order they give you a buzzer to let you know when it's ready. Fairly generous serving and the miso soup is good too. Wish they had some of the options that they offer at their full restaurant location.
Just don’t come here if you’re looking for tempura don. Tendon Kohaku is literally 450 metres away. The food was okay, but too many other factors make me feel a bit negative. Service was just fine, however based on the fact that Tendon Kohaku is just a few minutes walk away from this place, I cannot possibly recommend it. The tempura was not as hot and crispy as it is at Tendon Kohaku, and nor is there service attached to it. It’s simply the nature of it being located in a food court, but considering I’m paying the same price for a more “convenient” option is it really more convenient?, not getting any service, having to pay 15 cents for a take out box, when a better option is a few minutes walk away? Nope. Not coming here again. Also, the special tempura bowl I got had less ingredients in it than if I were to get a Kohaku Tendon bowl. I got whitefish, shrimp, kakiage, an egg, seaweed, and green beans for 17.95. Look at Kohaku Tendon’s 16.96 bowl, that includes 2 prawns, 1 chicken, 1 squid, 1 baby corn, 2 French beans, 1 shittake mushroom, 1 kabocha pumpkin, and 1 egg… I’ll let you decide for yourself which one you think is better. I obviously prefer Kohaku.
It's a new place for me to try and the experience was great! I tasted the tempura bowl and it was absolutely amazing! Complements to the chef please! The server was nice and the food taste pretty good, yes it took us a while to wait for the food, however it was fresh and the sauce on top is goooooood Yes, this is a new restaurant here and the service speed needs to be improved, however it is worth to wait. Can't wait to visit again! This is somewhere I can invite my friends and family to have a great lunch with.
I got the premium tempura which included a large portion of eel, egg, white fish, 2 shrimps, green beans and seaweed all served on top of rice with a side of miso soup. The batter was crispy and did not taste oily. Even though this is in a food court the wait can be 15 to 20 minutes, but atleast you know and can see that your food is being freshly prepared.
I have to say for food based in a mall, let’s start off with the presentation a 5/5 for sure. I ordered a Salmon Tendon bowl and you know what the taste was great, I liked it. It had great flavours and I enjoyed having the sauce on the side, it comes in a nice little bottle. Presentation gets full starts. But overall as a meal, it is quite portioned on the smaller side, but a positive being that the tempura was crispy. It is similar to Tendon Kohaku by Madison St near Brentwood. The only negative I have to say is that I did find the tempura to be a bit too oily and greasy but that’s just my opinion. The runny egg made the taste a lot better though! Overall I would give this place a 4/5, most coming from the presentation. For price 3/5 and for flavour and taste 3.5/5
Sad portion with 18$ rice bowl… I’ve been to the branch in downtown and I had a great experience there. So I really excited once it’s opened in my neighborhood. First of all, 10 mins waiting for prep the food and it was only me who ordered at that time. The foods not even hot or warm.. Expect miso soup… The portion is seriously disappointing with the price I paid, in the foods court… I expected to feel better after a meal but need to eat something else afterwards. By the way, the quality of foods at this branch isn’t that amazing . This branch is overhyped cuz the insta foodies and overpriced for the Amazing Brentwood. Don’t get me wrong, the foods is instagramable but just not for filling up kinda thing.
Overpriced! And I will never purchase again. The size is small and the food quality is not satisfied. The tempura is not crispy. For a Japanese tendon, pearl rice should be used whereas this restaurant uses the long grain rice. It makes me really disappointed.
