Onggi Korean Cusine
"ocated in Burnaby, BC, Onggi Korean Cuisine is a bright and energetic Korean restaurant with a vintage industrial interior.Onggi is a pure Korean word used to describe pottery bowls used to store soy sauce, soybean paste, and gochujang Korean red pepper paste. The size and shape of the pottery vary, and it is made differently depending on the characteristics of each region or climate. Although it looks similar to porcelain, which is mainly used for decoration and ornamentation, onggi is useful in real life and has been part of people’s life for a long time. As the name entails, we will ensure to provide you with a pleasant experience here in a friendly atmosphere."

I really love this place! It’s quite small and unassuming in a corner of a mall but they do some dishes really well! If you’re okay with fishy flavours, I highly recommend grilled mackerel set with rice and fermented bean soup. We also had the spicy rice cake and it’s a lot for two people so order at your own discretion. They also have side dish refills and my favourite by far is the kimchi and the marinated potatoes. If you’re into Korean food, this is a must try!
I’ve been looking for a good Korean cold noodles in town, and I finally found this hidden gem in the Korean town. The shaved icy soup with tender noodles are so great for the summer time. We also ordered the spicy pork and squid. It was tasty and portions were big. If you are craving for Korean food, this is a great place to go.
Came here for the seasonal cold noodles based on everyone else's reviews and it did not disappoint! We also tried the stir-fry squid with rice balls and that was delicious. The cold noodles had a slushy soup and was tangy - super refreshing on a hot day. The rice balls mixed in with the squid and spicy sauce really well. It also came with a mini hot soybean soup. I've had the seafood pancake and Korean corn dog assorted pot but didn't take a photo. Both are already really good dishes!
Don't let the mall food-court looks deceive you - Ongii is a great spot for soul warming Korean soup, Instagram friendly lunch box and a beautifully grilled mackerel that I can eat over and over again. Everything so far was cooked with care and nicely presented. Looking forward to working my way through the rest of the men! Friendly and welcoming service. Tons of parking. Two thumbs up. Parking: Lots of parking around and upstairs as well Wheelchair accessibility: All on ground level
Loved the spicy squid and pork belly dish!! The sesame oil rice balls were fun and different than your usual bowl of white rice, and I like that the meal comes with soybean soup. So comforting especially on cold nights!!
The food was overall good. Ine of the side dish soup was overly seasoned with MSG making it taste slightly salty along with a hard hit of umami at the back of the throat. The kimchi was tasty and the gamjatang pork bone soup was delicious. The pork and octopus dish was perfectly cooked and the flavour was good. The service was pleasant, helpful and professional. A good experience, but the food overall was not reflective of the super positive ratings I had read before trying this place. Medium good overall rating.
Hidden gem If you're in the ktown area on North Rd. this place is a must try! Highlights.. - menu has favorite Korean dishes such as army stew, tteokbokki, tofu soup but also some refreshing new korean dishes -portions are BIG - price is reasonable, good value. - food was fresh and tasted good! - service was better than all restaurants in the area - Their kimchi tastes so GOOD!! I ordered the grilled mackerel which came with a huge mackerel, rice, and a bowl of soup. And also the stir fry spicy squid+pork belly which also came with rice and soup. For two people it was a lot of food and we got to pack some home! I highly recommend this place! And I'll be back for more! :
Amazing food! I think this is the best korean food I have had since I went to Korea. Service is fast and polite and food is exceptional 100% recommend going here!
I called to make reservation a day in advance, so I made sure my family and I got a table for dinner without waiting. I saw people who did not make reservations had to wait at the door. We got a table at 6pm and ordered our food. The food did not arrive until 6:45pm! The wait time for the food was quite long! I believe the kitchen is small and/or they don’t have enough chefs or staff to work in the kitchen. A couple of servers ran around and took care of all orders and customers. They were quite busy. A server gave us water and poured it in to a small stainless steel cup for each of us, but the portion was very small and we finished drinking quickly. We didn’t have a kettle or jar of water or tea that we could serve ourselves. We had to wait for a server to pour water for us. They should improve their efficiency by giving each table a jar of water or tea, so customers could help themselves to get some water. Agreed?? The food was good. We ordered a spicy squid combo, mackerel combo and bimibap with beef. The portion of each dish was quite big. We had to pack some leftovers home. The presentation of each dish looked great. The only thing I would say was the side dishes. There were a very small dish of bean sprouts, a small dish of kimchi and a small dish of soy sauce potatoes. We had a table of four people. All these side dishes were the same size of the ones that a table of two people got. If we had four people, should we get a bit more? I total understand that we could ask for refill but the restaurant should have thought of the portion of how much of the side dishes they should give to a table of two, four, six or more people. I would love to come back and try their lunch special indeed. They have a really fancy photo online to show this special lunch that comes with many different things. I look forward to trying it.
This place just open for two months. However, they are quite busy even on weekdays. I heard they have lunch special box, however I decided not to try them due to personal reason. Anyway here are the reviews for the food that I ordered. 1. STIR-FRIED SQUID AND PORK BELLY This food comes with five rice balls and also soup on the side. The rice balls itself was seasoned with sesame and other things I don’t know what they are. Overall this one is good and worth the money! They cooked the pork belly as how I cook mine at home which is little bit crispy. Squid was cooked perfectly. Portions for this is quite big for me. 2. DOLSOT BIBIMBAP Another big portions lots of filling and beef. However too much sesame oil for this one, but other than that everything is perfect! 3. SEAFOOD SOON DU-BU JJIGAE This is the least favourite from what I ordered. When I taste them at the first time, I was thinking maybe I should order the beef one. It just too much squid inside, maybe I already “full” from the spicy squid. It just need more seasoning in my opinion, I just added the kimchi side dish on mine and it taste better. In addition to that, I feel the pot itself is not hot enough. and I prefer if they serve the egg on the side, instead of crack and put it in inside the soup. You never know if someone has allergy and forget to mention that just in case. Overall side dishes are good, love their kimchi a lot. I think they are little bit short staff, I only saw 2ppl working. One little thing is they don’t really walk around to check if you need more water/tea
