The food is authentic northern Chinese. The pork dumplings were bigger than I thought and they did have 18 little wrinkles. The crab dumplings were much better though. I would probably have liked to just order more crab than the pork dumplings. Keep in mind the sauces on the side were chili oil and vinegar, not soy sauce. The duck was decent, we chose the second duck dish as salt and pepper, which was only decent as well. Service was great though, the people were friendly and helpful. The place was very clean, however there were a few flies around and there was an occasional stinky tofu smell coming from outside only for a few seconds at a time and not sure if that's common and definitely not their fault. For sure worth a visit if not just for the crab dumplings!
Great service. They served us despite we arrived late. We ordered many dishes and they all were interesting to try and delicious. I had a dough drop soup with small dried shrimp and really loved it. Desserts were also great, I only wish they had a bigger variety. My boyfriend found the food of Tianjin there and said it tasted like at home. This place looks great both from the outside and inside and the prices are reasonable. So underrated!!!!
Pretty good northern chinese food. I’d recommend the braised sea bass and soup dumplings. The service was fast and attentive. The con, like with most downtown restaurants is that it’s overpriced.
Awesome Chinese restaurant! I don’t know why the google map comments are so mean to this restaurant maybe those comments were too outdated. They served actually the best Chinese cuisine we’ve ever had during my whole short global journey. We’re actually tourists from China. Before Canada, we’ve been to UK and US and never give up looking for good Chinese restaurant. Firstly, waiter and waitress in BAO are both very friendly, and they serve with strong hospitality. Dishes we order were 1. Chicken Soup Wonton 2. Mapo Tofu 3. Pork Tripe with Chicken in Hotpot names translated by myself may vary in menu. Chicken soup is very tasty while the wontons are specifically delicious with pork and shrimps inside. Mapo tofu completely reflected the traditional flavor of Sichuan cuisine. Without exaggeration, I can finish two bowl of rice by myself only with this tofu dish. Besides, size of plate also surprised me. Mapo tofu always be served in small plate in China to keep its strong unique flavor. But BAO’s Mapo tofu was placed in a big plate without any disruption of its flavor. It was such a satisfaction. As for the hotpot, size of it is extremely large, and the ingredients are also abundant. The quality of chicken is pretty high, and tripe slices taste very chewy. We were so satisfied with all dishes ordered. I have to say that the taste of this restaurant is definitely worth its price! I would definitely love to come back!
Been there several times, i kind like this restaurant, like the Tianjin flavored food, i will say this place is probably not for everyone, because their Tianjin specialties contains like pork or beef liver, kidney, tripe, etc., so maybe not for everyone, but at least I enjoy themFood: 4/5
Really good buns even better tomato hotpot and a golden spoon. Service was great and they had a vending machine that had tiny pokeballs which was very cool. Loved it there would recommend. Edit: It’s been a year, we drove 5 hours, rented a hotel room and this was my first stop. The stew is still my favourite thing in the whole city. Everything is as amazing as I remember it. I love you Bao Restaurant Chinatown.
Been here before to this northern Chinese restaurant. Very different cuisine than what I am used to when it comes to Chinese food. I like the variety though and most of the stuff I've tried is pretty good, just different and not what I usually order. Staff is ok, could be a bit more friendly and attentive though. Overall I would definitely return next time I'm in the mood for different Chinese food amd I do recommend to those who like traditional Chinese food to give this placeq try for something the same but different.
Disastrous experience and rude manager ruined the reputation of this restaurant. We were frequent customers of this restaurant until the last visit when the manager ruined the whole thing. It started with the eggplant dish which was in the “Tianjin traditional family style” section. It was bitter and we just asked the manager if there’s anything wrong with it cuz it’s so bitter to a level that’s not far from poisoning. He was like “that’s how this dish tastes”. When we pointed out that one of us was born and raised in Tianjin where this restaurant originally from, he was like “oh but it has nothing to do with Tianjin”. Come on man you need to get some training before you take this position. Then he was somehow irritated when I pointed out his mistakes and claimed that he’s gonna call the police. That’s hilarious because I’m not a fired employee and you are not a security in an office building. So I was like please do, I’m waiting to see what the police has to say about your weird attitude and bitter eggplants and very sloppy traditional dishes. So it ended up with the other waitress, who was calm and friendly, persuaded me to not complain this manager. Oh the manager very likely forgot to order another dish and he didn’t confirm with the dishes when ordering and said the delay was caused by a group of VIP guests. That’s funny too cuz there were only three tables having meal in the lounge room and if that’s too much work for you, you are incompetent.
Really beautiful environment. Delicious food presented beautifully. Servers are patient and attentive.Food: 5/5
Truly authentic Chinese foods. Exactly same or exceed the high end restaurants cooking level in mainland China. Visited this restaurant twice within 24 hours. Highly recommend to anyone who is interested in authentic Chinese food northern china tastes. Services is great, kind, and nice . Price is truly reasonable $20~$30 per personRecommended dishesFish Fillet in Hot Chilli Sauce
