We're a year round, youth-run community social enterprise in North End Halifax, growing healthy food for a healthy community. Plant a seed, harvest a dream!
Hope Blooms engages at-risk youth and the community at large in the inner city of Halifax, as the central change agents in building positive environments that foster resilience, empowerment, inclusion, leadership and community growth. Over the past six years Hope Blooms has provided a safe and flourishing space where youth have the opportunity to work with adult mentors, community members, business community, and neighborhood agencies to build nurturing internal and external environments. Through their own actions and hard work, youth learn how to grow organic food and take home over 2500 pounds of produce, cook along with local Chefs to turn their grown produce in culinary delights, and successfully grow a small social enterprise from the ground up where all profits go back into community and one dollar per bottle of dressing sold into their scholarship fund. Our motto is "when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. One of the greatest impacts that Hope Blooms has made is to provide youth with the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial efforts within their community to create an economically self sustaining “micro-economy.” Research has demonstrated that empowerment works to transform at risk youth into young entrepreneurs, who can then act as change agents in their own communities to create real social and economic impacts. Youth are empowered to create a vision of what is possible, to build leadership skills by training and sharing experiences with other youth and to inspire action to avoid poverty and lead a better, more fulfilling life through their own personal development.
Purpose: To benefit the public by establishing and maintaining youth-centered activity and programming in economically deprived communities which promotes and advances health and wellness and community development.
