This is an Ottawa Gem! I really enjoy a movie night here. Supporting local helps our community thrive over big chain theatres. The Bytowne’s programming is awesome with films that don’t hit the mainstream. You can’t beat the pricing, especially with the membership. The staff is always super friendly and welcoming. Real butter on the popcorn! They also have wine and beer. The seats are always really comfortable.
Went to ByTowne this summer for a Drunken Cinema night. We watched The Wedding Singer one of my favourites and we’re handed out one playing card each before the movie. Essentially, you drink when one of these things happen in the movie. Needless to say, we had a blast. The theatre is really quite nice and decorated in a way that feels old fashioned and comforting. The staff were beyond friendly and the popcorn was that kind of popcorn that you can only get at small cinemas. SO GOOD. I loved the idea of drunken movie nights and it was fun to see a classic film with other fans who dress up and shout out their favourite lines. 10/10
One thing I love about ByTowne Cinema is it’s choice of movie screening. In the three months I have been in Ottawa, I have watched Akira, Old boy and Decision to Leave and if I could I will watch a movie there every week.
Didn't expect a cool place as such. Been here one week night, way more peer audience to enjoy than modern one on the town. Clean, despite preserving the classic feel and touch of the theatre. Clever choice of indie movies, would be great if they could give more variety to their playlist. My first choice in town, if feeling like going to the movies.
I love this cinema! It's an important local historical landmark and they play great foreign and independent films. Their concessions have wine, draft beer and cider as well as Dominion City Seltzers. I would recommend going as early as possible before showtime because they are usually short staffed and the concessions lines are long, but it's worth it!
Always very interesting line up of movies. If you like Hollywood style blockbusters, this is not the place. Good popcorn. Get there early to get good seats; if a popular movie, you'll line up outside till the doors open 30 minutes before showtime, so dress for the weather!
Some of the front doors where locked, couldn't get out for a smoke. When I went back into the food lobby the ticket guy was kinda rude and yelled at me. I know the place was chaotic and the guy was clearly pressed for time but he could have at least apologized for embarrassing me. "Okay, good" is not an apology. "Sorry my bad." Would have been much better for a paying customer. Otherwise the food service was good and the screening was super. But I'm only going too leave 3 stars for the locked door business and rude behavior.
I used to be a regular at the Bytowne, many moons ago, and I might return to see a niche film in future, but I was disappointed with my first experience back at the theatre, recently. $20 cash for a Greek documentary with poor audio quality apparently due to the film itself, not the theatre. If they'd charged $20 for 2, or even all 3, Greek festival films that day, that would've been a more reasonable offer, and I might have returned and bought more concessions. Regular film price, without a membership, is more than $14 in advance, and I guess a bit less if you pay in cash at the venue, and then they hand-write you a receipt - which seems wildly inefficient. You would think there would be a small incentive for advance payment. Staff were friendly.
It was my first time there. They were showing some silent movies from the 1920s. The cool thing is that there was a really good piano player playing along with the movies! Great experience!
Love this theatre and glad we have a few indie gems like this in the city. One suggestion: a popcorn flavouring station would be amazing!
