Went for the first time on Friday for the Twilight Galentines show, and it was the most fun I’ve had in a while. The energy was incredible. Sad that I’ve lived here for 2.5 years and this was my first time visiting, I will definitely be back.
To start: I LOVE the Bytowne. Independent theatres are so vital to the artistic culture of a city, and I think there aren’t many places that hold the city of Ottawa’s heartbeat like the Bytowne.nnI’ve been a member for years and go several times a month because of their outstanding variety and selection of movies. However, something in particular has been bugging me in the past couple years especially.nnAs much as the theater is clean, I’ve always felt the employees to be a bit hostile and passive aggressive towards patrons, not just myself. It feels as if every time I go inside there is a rushed and stressful feeling radiating off of the folks working there.nnI try to attend screenings nice and early to avoid concession lines, and just to keep the lobby clear for closer to showtime. But even well before the screening, it seems employees are rushed and stressed, and not particularly welcoming.nnIt’s the opposite of how I feel this place, that holds such a dear place in my heart, should feel like on the way in. And I want to reiterate; I think the establishment itself is amazing, and I want to see the Bytowne get even more popular in the years to come. However, I think prioritizing the customer experience will be important to retain long-time customers, and that is primarily why I’m posting this review.nnA quick side note as well; I’m not sure if anyone else is noticing it, but with their new screen/projector combo, there has been a weird haze showing up over the screen, almost a fog over the movie itself.
ByTowne Cinema is a gem for movie lovers in Ottawa. We enjoyed the unique atmosphere and cozy vibe of this classic cinema. The selection of films is fantastic, often featuring indie, international, and classic movies you won’t find elsewhere. The seats are comfortable, and the screen quality is excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful, adding to the overall great experience.
Old-school theatre showing plenty of niche films and hidden gems, with friendly staff and great atmosphere. Much cheaper than Cineplex, especially if you get a membership. Keep an eye out for special events, like Hong Kong Cinema Classics just a few weeks ago. Highly recommended!
Best pop corn in the city with their real butter. We are members so it support this old cinema that must never close. They show classic movies as well as new releases. Don't expect to see the new Marvel blockbuster and thank god for that .
