About

Hotel on Stanley crossing Sherbrooke

Story

The area we are in is called the Golden Square Mile. Historically, it was an English speaking area and was home to the upper middle class of Montreal. Our hotel was originally two separate homes constructed in 1910.

At some point, the main house where the reception is currently located was owned by a Madame Ambrose. Little is known about her, except for stories from her former tenants who have visited us. Our Family Suite was her Honeymoon Room, which she kept in honour of her late husband for many years, after he passed away in the Second World War. Left with a large building to occupy by herself, she decided to rent out the rooms to travelers and students. To this day, we still have the original signage of the “Ambrose Travel Lodge” on the glass panel above our main entrance.

In the 1970s, the building was purchased from her as well as the house next door, and a passage was made in the staircase to merge the two sides. It was then converted into a hotel, and has remained so since.

The current owners have operated the hotel since 2011. Many changes have been made to the hotel to keep it updated. Amongst them was moving the breakfast room up from the basement to its current location, which was once a guest room.

Have only been to the cafe here, but several times. Coffee and pastries are delicious, everything is well priced, very comfortable atmosphere. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

I stayed in a standard room which came with a private bathroom that included a large tub. Basic toiletries and a hair dryer are provided. No coffee maker in room but there is a cafe downstairs inside the hotel that opens at 7am. Very clean! Great price! Awesome location to walk to everything downtown. They even have parking if you try to reserve in advance. And if not, there is a parking garage a block away.

I think anyone that gives this place less than 5 stars wasn't looking at the Ambrose Hotel for what it truly is. This is a petite, independently owned hotel. It is in an old, quirky building but they have updated it quite nicely without taking away it's charm. The white walls and white bricks are to die for. I initially chose this place because it was close to where I needed to be, but I'll be coming back because of how great my experience was. Not only is it close to everything but it's close to the metro as well. I reserved a parking spot in their little back lot ahead of time based on other people's reviews. It was $20 and I can come and go as I please which is totally worth it as parking can be a hassle in Montreal. The staff was so nice, very accommodating, and able to answer all of my questions. The Wi-Fi was strong and so was the delicious coffee in the cafe downstairs. The avocado toast was delicious too. My bed was really comfortable and the room was clean and the perfect size for me. The entire hotel was very quiet and relaxing. A lot of people have complained about there not being an elevator in the building but I was on the third floor and didn't mind at all. I will be coming back.

It's a rainy and warm winter day but upon entering the cafe the day seems lighter. Three students quietly study at a table, occasionally breaking into conversation to explain the secrets of cellular structure. The staff are friendly while I place my order from the paper menu hanging beside the iPad register. The barista picks through a small box of wooden stamps to pick one for my punch card. This takes a few moments out of her now break time. She says she doesn't mind, she likes working here. The seating area is cozy, equipped with cushions and flanked by leafy plants. The music is soft and unobtrusive, no need to raise your voice above it. My espresso comes. It tastes like dark carmel and the sandwich is fresh and warm. The students have pack up and left for class now. I suspect they'll visit again. I suspect I will as well.

Location is nice within walking distance of great shopping and old Montreal. A little bit noisy, but the rooms are very nice. Excellent bathtub, and friendly service.
