This restaurant had a real hole-in-the-wall feeling to it, being on the back side of the Kennedy-Sheppard plaza. Parking turned out to be free despite the posted signs. It was quiet on a Saturday night, which is a real shame considering the quality of food we had. The chef makes the noodles fresh daily, and the dumplings were hand-made as well. The noodles were firm and tasty - while the braised beef was very tender, the Yunxi Braised Pork Noodles had the better-tasting broth that complemented the hand-made noodles. And, the pork was melt-in-your-mouth soft - cooked to perfection. The dumplings 12 per order were fresh and she also prepared the dipping sauce with one for my child and another with chili for a nice kick. The steamed dumplings was a nice touch, and we also tried the pan-fried option as well. You could taste the freshness of the ingredients and see the hard work put in by the chef in the meals. My kid is still talking about the food a day after - heck, I'm still thinking about the food and when I can go back again...
If mom and pop restaurants are your jam, Yunxi Handmade Noodles will have you swooning as it’s an intimate establishment. Technically, Yunxi would be considered a mom restaurant as the female owner acts as the Jill of all trades: hostess, chef, server, and cleaner. She’s a sweet lady describing what was freshly prepared for the day in my case, the noodles as she rotates between making noodles and preparing dumplings daily. The broth of the braised beef noodles $14.99 was salty and strong, as one should expect from a dish that’s essentially beef braised in soy sauce. I liked that Yunxi finishes the freshly made noodles in the soup to allow it to soak in flavours and develop a brownish tint. While there wasn’t a whole lot of beef, the handful of chunks were lean and tender. Halfway through the meal, the owner returns with a small bowl of extra noodles, asking if we’d like a complementary top-up. Why of course, and into the bowl they go for round two. My first choice in dumplings leek, shrimp, and pork was sold out so we opted for the chicken and mushroom instead $10.99 for 12. With a choice of preparation - steamed, boiled, or pan fried – I generally order them steamed as I find this leaves the dumplings the most neutral so you can appreciate the filling’s flavours and the consistency of the wrapper. Unlike the noodles, the dumplings were made previously at least a couple of days prior so the wrapper was too hard and chewy. Consequently, I’d recommend asking the owner when things were prepared and if it isn’t fresh, order the dumplings boiled to give the wrapper some extra hydration. At least the filling was juicy – use a spoon to ensure the juices aren’t lost as they squirt out – and the dumplings were filled with a decent portion of the well seasoned, finely minced chicken and mushrooms.
This is a small and cozy family owned restaurant. One of the best noodles that I’ve ever had. I ordered the pig intestines noodles and this is the owner’s specialty. It is very hard to make a good dish with pig intestines because it requires a super thorough prepping stage. It needs to be very clean in order to taste good. On top of that, the intestines are not super chewy like most other restaurants make it. It has the perfect texture for this soup noodles. The noodles are handmade and cooked just about right, not too soggy not too hard. Definitely will return and bring more friends with me :.
Tasty and authentic noodle shop! We were served by a mother daughter duo who were very friendly. Noodle bowl portion was huge and staff offered to give us even more noodles plus a side of pickled veggies! Also liked the fresh dumplings.Hope to come again in the future.
My partner and I ate here this past Wednesday night after seeing it on Google. What a great find! We ordered the potherb mustard and shredded pork noodles, pork belly noodles, and dumplings. The bowls were huge and delicious and we even got a top up of extra noodles. The lovely owner is very friendly and does everything from the cooking to serving the meal. I would definitely come here again for a hearty bowl of handmade noodles.
Really delicious noodles. Got the intestine noodles, mixed noodles and dumplings and it was so good and the portions were amazing for the price. Definitely coming back to try more things. The chef was really welcoming and nice too
Saw the good reviews and decided to drop by on a cold winter evening for dinner. There were no other customers in the restaurant and only one employee owner I assume. She was both the front and back of house. Food was soso. I don’t believe that the noodles are handmade; they taste rubbery. The braised beef was great. Too Expensive for the taste, quality and area.
I don’t write reviews but this place definitely deserves it. This hidden gem has one of the best beef soups I’ve ever had. Free noodles, clean, and good service. Lady is also a gem. 10/10 recommend.
Very recommended family owned noodle spot. As a hand-made food lover, I like their dumplings, and they have frozon package for take-home!! For the noodle, they would pan fried the toppings, which tasted impressive
I had the pork intestine noodles, pork, shrimp and leek dumpling, zhajiangmien and xiaolongbao at the restaurant. Every dish was delicious, and fresh! The lovely owner handmakes everything and its clear that she pays a lot of attention to quality and service. Will be back to try other dishes. Highly recommend this place!
