The cleanliness standards at this store are horrendous. Ever take a peek at the floor in the milk cooler? There's at least a quarter inch of spoiled milk gunk just chilling down there on the floor. Ever pull the produce baskets off the shelf and look underneath your peppers & brussel sprouts? I did... mold spores galore. I bought a bag of romaine lettuce the other day, organic variety, so paid more, and wouldn't you know.. it was FULL of tiny black bugs upon opening. Disgusting.nnWhoever inspects this store for health and safety needs to get a new pair of glasses. We drive to Pembroke to get our produce and dairy now... Im not a fan of playing Russian roulette with bacterial infection. Ill take the hit on the gas tank.nnNot impressed.
My recent visit to Independent Grocer was extremely disappointing, and I honestly don’t understand how this store manages to stay in business with the experience it offers. From the moment I walked in, the place felt chaotic. A lot of the aisles were poorly organized, with products stacked haphazardly or left out of place, making it difficult to find even basic items. Several shelves were completely empty, and it didn’t seem like anyone was making an effort to restock them.nnThe produce section was especially frustrating. Many of the fruits and vegetables looked past their prime—bruised, wilted, or overpriced considering the condition they were in. I noticed multiple items without price tags, and I had to go back and forth trying to confirm prices with staff who seemed irritated that I even asked.nnSpeaking of staff, the customer service was one of the worst parts of the visit. Most employees looked like they didn’t want to be there. When I asked someone for help locating a product, I got a vague gesture toward an aisle rather than any real assistance. The checkout experience was even worse: only one register was open despite a long line, and the cashier hardly acknowledged customers. The whole process felt slow, disorganized, and stressful.nnThe final blow was the pricing. For the quality and condition of the store, the prices are far too high. I left feeling like I had wasted both my time and money. There are plenty of grocery stores that offer better cleanliness, friendlier service, and fairer prices. Unfortunately, Independent Grocer delivered none of these. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Independant has always been known for having high quality food for a marginally higher price - you get what you pay for more or less. However they recently raised the price of their in-house fruit bowls old fruit that doesn’t sell from $10 to $11. I inquired about it and was told that they would look into it.nFast forward 3 weeks and they raised it AGAIN to $12. This is half-spoiled fruit mind you.nIt’s nice to know that the store manager is squeezing the locals dry while most are struggling.nFood basics it is.
Decided to grab some chicken tenders and a salad kit to make some chicken ceaser wraps. The salad kit was 7.00$ and it isn’t even a serving for one person. The lettuce is all brown and slimy dark green. Chicken tenders are good as always.
Everyone I know in Petawawa loves this grocery store best because they know where to find everything, the staff are friendly and the owners do a lot for the community!
