I’ve been many times over the years. Great cocktails! However arriving I was curtly asked to get a mask. No problem with this. Some places still require them, and not all provide them. I decided to be altruistic and buy 60 bucks in masks 80 masks. So I could gift them to the bar so other people could have a mask if they forgot theirs. However I was told they wouldn’t offer masks to patrons as of policy. Also fine, so I kept the masks on me. After one couple came in without masks, I asked if I could offer them an extra mask so they could come in. He told me no and asked them to leave. When I asked why he explained that he wouldn’t offer them a shirt or shoes, so why would he offer them masks. To me it felt like it was with a tone as if I should know better than to ask that. Sadly that left a bit of a bitter feeling about the place, as I was just trying to pay it forward. I’ll reconsider coming back here next time.
A while ago we came to the bar, it was a bit noisy and couldn't hear the bartender say "wait", so we approached to hear what he said and were scolded/yelled at for doing so. Honestly pretty rude and despite having been here before, I doubt I'll go back since there are so many more cozy and comfortable options in the neighborhood with better drinks. Why bother going a place to relax when you actually feel like you are in school?
If I could give a place 0 stars this would be it. The bartender was rude as mentioned in the previous comment and pretty much had the same experience. One of us in the group ran home to grab masks as not required by the state anymore. If you’re looking for a cocktail bar in Phinneywood go to Cozy Nut or Oliver Twist instead.
Never been treated so rudely in Seattle -- we are pro-vax, understand the proprietor's rule requiring masks and are happy to comply but didn't have one on hand the exact moment we walked in the door and were immediately yelled at by the owner. We asked politely if we could be provided a mask and were yelled at again, just like so many others who reviewed before me here. Will never go back or encourage anyone to go.
I walked up and found the place completely empty on a Friday evening. The bartender rudely confronted me and told me that I needed to wear a mask to enter. You know, so I could walk six feet through the empty restaurant to a table and then immediately take it off. I didn't have one with me since nowhere else requires it, and they do not supply them. The bartender then abruptly asked me to leave. Now I see why the place was empty. I went to Gainsbourg across the street and had a good cocktail.
As many before me... I also had the displeasure of interacting with the bartender/owner of this bar. I'm a delivery service provider that operates out of a large brown truck and I had a question about this bar's neighboring business. I walked into this bar - in uniform, and the bartender/owner immediately put on a mask, and as he was doing so he aggressively asked if I had one. I did, so I pulled it out of my pocket and put it on, then I proceeded to ask a few simple and brief questions about the business next door. His responses were snarky and rude, but primarily it was the way he delivered them. He acted as if I was inconveniencing him just by walking into his business. He gave me the sense that he felt like it wasn't his problem or responsibility. Technically it wasn't, but all I was asking for was a little bit of help . NOTE: this was around 1645 - mid afternoon, and NOBODY was in the bar. I completely respect the fact that it's his choice to require masks in his place of business, and I'm not opposed to wearing them. However, to be rude about it is unacceptable. He felt it was so important to aggressively ask me to put on a mask that he couldn't even be bothered to say hello or greet me in any way prior to his mask question. He didn't have that kind of time apparently. I can't wrap my brain around how people in the customer service industry can treat people the way he does. I can't even imagine being a customer in his bar. If you hate what you're doing so much that you feel justified being rotten to your customers, then you probably should look into doing something else. I've never been to this bar as a civilian, but his unprofessional behavior and absolutely poor customer service 100% assured that he will never get even a penny of my money or a moment of my time.
Update: I recently heard this bar is closing, thanks goodness! Cheers to the new owners of the this space. Light some sage. My experience with this bar may be a little bit different from others. We went to this bar with a few friends and when we got there the bar still required us to wear a masks and vaccination parts which we didn’t have an issue with. However the woman standing in front of us had her vaccination card but forgot to bring her mask even though people 3 feet away from her were not wearing a mask. The owner yelled at her and told her that she can’t be in here and actually asked her to get out. Then told her we do not provide mask. We were so disgusted by the owners behavior that we ended up leaving . I understand and support a business is right to choose who can come in and out of there establishment however, there is no excuse for his rudeness. And I would recommend that nobody go to this bar unless you want to be treated like a hostile person. Instead go to Poindexter’s or Halcyon, they were wonderful with customer service and we told them what happened and what we witnessed they said that they weren’t surprised a lot of people complain about that bar.
Great place to hang and have drinks and talk. No need to yell over the excellent selection of modern instrumental and 60s 70s funk music. The sound and lighting are perfectly balanced as well as the schoolhouse theme of the menu. Grilled cheese and pudding. But the drinks are carefully curated towards sophisticated adultery minded individuals looking to augment their simpy corporate doldrum life and add a little hipsteresque fairy dust to their evening. Highly recommended!
Should have read the reviews before I went. I was also yelled at by the bartender while I was standing in the doorway trying to find a mask in my bag. Haven't needed it in a while so was seeing if I had one and was told to leave. There was not a single person in there during happy hour so I can predict it won't be open too much longer. Walked to Flint reek Cattle nearby and they had great cocktails and friendly staff. Skip this place and go there.
The bartender/proprietor is rude and has unreasonable mask expectations. My husband and I are double vaccinated, boosted and happy to wear a mask. We didn’t have a mask with us because it’s been a couple of months since the state has required it. Immediately upon entering, I asked if he had a mask and mid-sentence he cut me off saying he does not supply masks and asked us to leave. I understand he is allowed to ask customers to wear a mask but I think at this point he could put out a box for folks who don’t have one. The irony of all of this is we’ve been to this bar before. We live in the neighborhood and have had pleasant conversations with him in the past. I get that we are living in crazy times but that should never excuse the unpleasant attitude that we, and clearly many other reviewers have experienced. If you’re looking for a truly great cocktail, go Flint Creek across the street! Teachers Lounge is not worth it.
