Had some issues with a charge on my Visa Check Card and how I was able to go over in which I got 2 OD charges for the same transaction, even though I made a deposit within 9 hours of making the card transaction. I paid a bill online via my check card around 11pm one night and when I realized it put me in the red doing so, I went to the bank when they opened and deposited enough cash to cover it. When it posted, I received an OD fee even though the cash deposit ensured the visa charge never actually posted in the red. The explaination I got was that if you make a mistake and overdraw your account with your visa check card, THE FEE IS ASSESSED RIGHT AWAY, EVEN IF YOU WERE TO MAKE A CASH DEPOSIT THE SAME DAY! The moment the card is swiped, you're assessed a fee on the "pending" amount and then again when it clears. Needless to say I wasn't too happy about this and went to the bank that weekend and withdrew my whole paycheck but before I did so, I asked, "if I withdraw X amount of money, will there be anymore fees?" I was assured no and sure enough, the next day, I got hit with another OD fee when the card transaction actually posted. So to sum up, TCF has tailored it's accounts to accrue the most fess possible, the tellers are poorly trained and will give bad advice and to boot, if you have an issue you need to discuss with the manager, you might have to wait a day or two for them to be there because the 800 customer service cannot help you and the tellers are very rude to deal with, even when you're the one smiling and trying to me nice. Time for me to find a credit union.

3 years ago my wife's wallet was stolen. We knew within an hour and called and cancelled all of the cards she was carrying including the TCF check card. The card was cancelled but we didn't know there was more to the process. We were never transferred to fraud. It took over 2 months to get the overdraft charges straightened out. We now bank at Wells Fargo. This morning, Sunday, May 13th, I received a call from Wells asking me about some online purchases made with my business card. They were fraudulant. I wasn't aware of any problems until that call. The card has been cancelled, a new one will arrive within a week and they are already working on returning the moneys to my account. After these two experiences I wouldn't trust TCF with a piggybank.
