St. Joseph’s Villa Dundas has failed on multiple occasions to protect our loved one from harm from allergen containing food, other residents she has been slapped, pinched, grabbed multiple times, failed to prevent 2 PSW’s from abusing her. We warned the Director of Care, Assistant Director of Care, and Resident Care manager that our loved one was exhibiting signs of abuse when a particular PSW was near them, and specifically said she’s scared of her. Two weeks later we caught that same PSW along with her buddy physically assaulting our loved one in the washroom, shoving her down, but because we didn’t have video evidence nothing was done, they even refused to take the PSW off the floor.nnThey are 100% unable to accommodate dietary needs if your loved one has an allergy. We were told at admission gluten free for celiac disease was no problem, and over 20 times in 7 months we witnessed them try to feed them non gluten free food. That’s just the times we were there, that doesn’t include during the day. The DOC confirmed it’s impossible to have a gluten free diet, said it’s human error, “errors can happen,” and has continuously refused to implement any changes to ensure our loved one was protected from harm e.g. when suggested they have a 2nd person sign off that the meal is gluten free said that’s not possible because there’s too many residents.nnIf you have to have a loved one here, you need to be there everyday or they will not be taken care of. It’s too bad because there are some core staff on the floor who are amazing, it seems to be evening, weekend, new, and temporary staff that are the problem. So there is huge room for error. The examples I’ve given are just the beginning and don’t include patient hygiene issues, ignoring other residents screaming for help, or the lack of cleanliness.nThe Ministry also refuses to fine the home for some reason after multiple complaints, non compliance orders, and falsified reports by the home, so everything just continues. *Sept 2024 update: 2 weeks ago the Ministry witnessed 2 residents soaked through their diapers and pants with urine at 12:30PM left this way for at least 3 hours before I arrived and reported it to staff. Yet she still refused to issue a non-compliance order for not following her care plan to queue her. As per usual, my mother would have been left in her soiled undergarments all day until my father arrived at 3PM to change her. Absolutely disgusting.
As my father-in-law's dementia progressed and emergency Long-Term Care placement was required, we fretted over the need to admit him to a facility. We feared the worst, but were so wrong. In December of 2021, he was admitted to Birch Trail at St. Joseph's Villa. The staff were competent, caring, compassionate and truly a credit to their profession. The building was always spotlessly clean, patients were always out in common areas not locked away in their rooms, staff were engaged with residents and my father-in-law was always well looked after. On his passing this week the staff paid respects to him as he was wheeled out of the unit, some crying as they had lost a family member of their own. Thank you, St. Joseph's Villa for giving dignity to the final months of our beloved family member's life.
My experience at the villa was horrible to say the least. I was fat shamed, rude psw, made fun of, ridiculed, one nurse tried to draw blood from a requisition that belonged to someone else. The food was awful and the vegetables taste like mush. Noisy, residents were wandering around during the night unattended, staff sleep when they are on nightshift rather than getting their work done. Just because I was cognitive and articulate I was made to feel like a baby and had “attitude”. Horrible, horrible, horrible. The amount of money I was paying was not in any way shape or form for exemplary care. Their mission statement totally out of date. I am so glad to have escaped this glorified prison cell to return to my beautiful condo.
I work in emergency services so I have been to this home many times so this is where i homed my parents when it was necessary. It is a large pace but they still always managed to say hello to my father by name when ever he came to visit my mom.nThey let me know regularly when there were issues and it was dealt with.nThey were competant and caring. When my mom dying they handled it beautifully allowing regular safe visits during covid.nThey were screening very early during covid. They had patients with covid but given the size of the facility I can understand why. No complaints.
My mother. Rita Little was going down hill and I could no longer look after her in my home. The nightmare began with trying to find a good nursing home. When I saw St Joe's Villa I was impressed. Mom lived there for a week short of one year Valley Trails area I spent a lot of time there and the staff felt like family and I saw them have so much patience and compassion for their residents. The only thing I would change was hanging on to your own family doctor so you have more comfort in knowing every little detail. Thanks so much to the wonderful staff for helping my mother and I in this last part of her life as you made it so much more bearable. I would recommend this home to anyone. GROUP HUG
