Spanish Banks Beach Park

Story

Spanish Banks are a series of beaches in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, located along the shores of English Bay in the West Point Grey neighbourhood. Spanish Banks is located between Locarno Beach to the east and the grounds of the University of British Columbia to the west.HistoryAlthough the first European explorers in the Strait of Georgia were the Spaniards Juan Carrasco and José María Narváez, who sighted Point Grey in 1791, the Spanish Banks were named in commemoration of the meeting of the English under George Vancouver and the Spanish under Galiano and Valdés in June 1792. While Vancouver's maps do not show the bank, Galiano's charts of 1792 and 1795 do. The Hudson's Bay Company came to call the area Spanish Banks for these reasons. The name was bestowed upon them by Captain Richards of the HMS Plumper during his survey of Burrard Inlet in 1859.About Spanish Banks BeachesAlthough technically just one bank, the Spanish Banks beaches are divided into three sections: Spanish Bank East, Spanish Bank Extension, and Spanish Bank West. These beaches are backed by grassy fields, which make them popular for walks, family gatherings, picnics, soccer and volleyball games.

Another gorgeous day in Vancouver! Spring has arrived and a nice day at Spanish Banks. Summer is around the corner! Definitely the place to come and relax. The beaches just roll along this area. This is what we all live for here.

The alternative to Stanley Park and the Sea Wall. Getting there, enjoy the drive through the beautful Kitsilano and Jericho communities. When you arrive, soak in the rustic walks along the beach with beautiful views of the sunset and the Vancouver skyline. Lots of runners, bikers, and dog-walkers make this a well used and loved park. Good washroom and change facilities, outside showers, and parking too. Plus a couple of snack shacks for a quick bite.

This is arguably the best beach in town. It has the best view of downtown Vancouver and the entire North Shore. Grouse looks beautiful from here. You have the beach sand in front of you, the ocean next, downtown West Van in front of that, and the mountains in the background. You can't ask for a better view. Because this beach is larger in area than the other ones (Kits, Jericho, Eng. Bay, etc.) it never feels crowded. You also get great sunset views in the summer. The only drawback is the lack of sufficient number of porta-potty units. That might get fixed soon though. Hello Hon. Joyce Murray?!

10min from downtown Vancouver to the beach overlooking downtown? Are you kidding? Amazing for family's. Activities like roller blading, volley ball, people watching, photos, dog walking, jogging, etc. Fairly busy for obvious reasons so drinking, smoking, or a quiet retreat it's not. Large beach, soft sand.

Call me weird but I like it here more in the fall /winter. Less crowded, parking is easy and more peaceful. A nice spot for a long walk or just garner a view of West Vancouver and the Downtown skyline
