It's been quite a while since we last visited Red Star Seafood on Granville. This place is on the higher end and prices reflect that. Luckily, most of the food meets expectations.nnRed Star Siu Mai $12.98 XL was good. As was the fluffy Steamed Pork Buns $11.68 M. The Deep Fried Taro Pastries with Duck $12.38 L came with a quail egg and had a creamyand savory filling with the prefect texture that contrasts with the light and airy fried taro whisps on the exterior.nnThe Steamed Beef Balls with Tangerine Peel $11.68 M had big pieces of water chestnuts in it.nnI found the inclusion of seaweed on top of the Rice Roll with Fish Paste and Crispy Bean Curd Sheet $15.98 SP to be a bit distracting and totally unneeded. It would have been fine on its own. It had a delicate crisp from the bean curd and the fish paste filling was good too.nnWe also ordered the Shredded Chicken with Jelly Fish Salad $16.98. I found the portion size to be a bit smallish unlike their other dishes bit the pieces were cut too large. It was covered in a spicy sauce that had a bit of sour overtones. Not my fav version of this dish.
Our friends who live nearby suggested this place to meet up for dim sum. It was our first time but we liked how many parking spots they have.nnThey did not have a huge menu but got enough items for dim sum.nn1 The winner was the pineapple BBQ pork bun. It came with three pieces. They were relatively small but very good. It was crispy at the top but juicy inside. They even had small chunks of in the filling.nn2 Radish cake is my favourite food but they didn’t have it here. Instead they had the stir-fry version with XO sauce. It was good - standard - nothing special.nn3 Salted egg deep fried fish skin was a nice surprise. My friend highly recommended us to try this. It was very crispy but not fishy at all. The salted egg gave it an extra layer of flavour.nn4 Shrimp dumplings. It was very standard, nothing exceptional.nn5 Rice roll with Chinese donut. It was a bit of disappointment as it was only lukewarm and the Chinese donut was hard, not chunky and chewy.nn6 Beef ball. Another fairly standard item.nn7 Peer shaped deep fried pork dumplings. It took them very long time to get this to us. We had to remind them after almost an hour. It was very hot inside, so be careful when you wanted to just have a big bite at once. It was quite good but nothing extraordinary.nnOverall, service was quite good. We sat there and chatted for a long time, and no one gave us pressure or anything. Reasonably priced as well.
I would add more stars on the food if I could. So gooooooooooood! Services are good, food is great! It took us a while to find a restaurant since we did not have reservation. But they let us in since it’s just 3 of us. Very nice of them! We are so happy to have a nice meal on Chinese new year’s first day!
Not a huge selection on Dim Sum menu but it’s enoughnThey even have sushinComfortable sitting and attentive servernThey give us coupon for next timenTaste of food is good , portion is normal
Out of my surprise that this famous seafood restaurant still remains its long history of good reputation on food quality as well as service. They even voluntarily pack doggy bags for customers now most restaurants charges bags and boxes while having customers self pack. Reminds me of the poor experience at a so called Michelin-Star Chinese seafood restaurant at Cambie St @ W Broadway which service is awful while charging Michelin price.nRed Star’s washroom is super clean, even cleaner than another Michelin-star duck restaurant. Restaurant floor and table are clean without stains at all. Hard to believe this restaurant has been at the same location for more than 30 years!nAlso Red-Star offers after meal desert with cookies. Vancourites have not seen this @ most Chinese restaurants for a long time.nThank you Red Star for your good service and great food! Thank la to all staff who offer very considerate hospitality and support for new customers. Thanks for patience and kindness!nForgot to take photos of the order except the after meal desert and doggy bags. Will be back again!
