Paulina Lake Lodge

Story

Paulina Lake is one of the twin crater lakes in Newberry Crater, central Oregon, United States (the other being East Lake). It is located 6331ft above sea level in the Deschutes National Forest near La Pine. The lake's primary inflow is seepage from East Lake, snow melt, and hot springs, and its outflow is Paulina Creek, a tributary of the Deschutes River. It has an area of 1531acre, a volume of 249850acre.ft, a maximum depth of 250ft, a shore length of about 6.7mi, and a residence time of about 46 years. The lake is classified as mesotrophic, with a transparency of approximately 13.1ft. It is about 40ft lower and one mile west of its twin, East Lake.Paulina Lake sits within the Newberry Crater, formed from over 500,000 years of volcanic activity. The lake bears the name of Paulina, a Snake Indian.Recreational ActivitiesPaulina Lake supports a number of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding. A 10 mph speed limit on the lake prohibits motorized high speed watersports such as waterskiing and jet skis, which protects the lake as a popular fishing destination.Once devoid of fish, the lake is now regularly stocked by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and is known for its large number of kokanee salmon and brown trout. Other fish found in the lake include rainbow trout, tui chub, and blue chub. The largest brown trout caught on record in the State of Oregon – a whopping 28 lb., 5 oz. fish – was caught at Paulina in 2002, eclipsing previous records set at the same lake.

The views are amazing. The food is excellent, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is unique. We can’t wait to go back.
One of my favorite winter lunch spots. Not easy to get to and too many loud snowmobiles in the area. Buy a special and charming spot in the deep snow.
We spent the day exploring the area. It's absolutely stunning! Decided to eat at the restaurant and it was awful! The food was terrible. Not one of us took more than a few bites of our meal. Even the fries were bad. For the price we expected a lot better. The waitress was friendly but spread too thin and messed up several times. We actually regretted not stopping at Dairy Queen for burgers instead.
Beautiful place to stay. The staff at the resort is super helpful and friendly. Which overshadowed the few minor issues that the rustic cabins had. Bed was well broken in and the fridge was a bit noisy. When coming here you should pack bottled water as the water has a fair amount of sulphur in it. No surprise there as you are in a volcano. The food at the lodge was excellent fare given the remote location. This is a dead zone for cell phones so bring them for pictures but don't expect anything else and download maps in advance
Mixed experiences with our several stays there. You get what you pay for so don’t expect luxury or heating that reaches all the rooms by a wood stove heat source. It’s hard to find wood to heat the cabins. We had to turn on the stove burners and the oven with the door cracked open. That worked for the main room. The kitchens are fully stocked with everything you would need. Buy groceries in town and stock the fridge. If you’re a fisherman, then the kitchen is perfect for you. They have a good boat dock where you can rent out a boat spot. The restaurant there has good food I will admit. On certain days they have prime rib dinners. It’s very good. If you’re looking to find a good fishing lake with good cabins where you can cook, then this is the place for you. Just go when the temperatures are warm out. If not, you’ll have the heating problem. Enjoy yourself!
We came here last weekend 2/26/22. we had reservations for the snow cat ride, the snow cat driver called in sick. We were told we would have a ride on the 6 seater snow cat instead. We showed up and they had a 6 seater ATV, we had 9 people in one small vehicle and they still thought it was necessary to charge us $50 PER PERSON to ride up to the cabin for dinner. The whole reason we did this was for the snow cat ride. We were also super disappointed with the service we received at the lodge. There was no room for us to sit and start our reservation, we had to wait for other people to leave. Then the lady working was kind of rude to us the entire time we were there and half of us ended up with cold food. Needless to say we will NOT be back, nor recommend this place to others. We wish our experience had been better :
Cabin was rustic and had everything we needed. We were too late to order dinner but they went out of their way to put together 4 prime rib dinners for us to take back to our cabin. Didn't catch any fish was the only disappointment.
Good food and friendly helpful staff! If your out in the area snowmobiling great place to stop and warm up and have food and or drinks. A warm fire hot coco and cider were really appreciated by the kiddos!
Great time at Paulina, the lake is so beautiful in the winter. The cabin was spacious and super warm, we could ride right from our door. The trails were groomed and the back country snowmobiling was awesome! The owners are great hosts, the food in the restaurant was fabulous and the hospitality was amazing. Can't wait to go back!
Love this place! Been visiting there for over 20 years. Keep in mind these are rustic log cabins and off the grid. If you like luxury, TV and social media, this is not the place for you. Karen and Todd are great hosts and the scenery and fishing are the stars.
