I recommend the "Two Rivers" area for camping. Bald eagles overhead, refreshing river to swim in, not really any tails to speak of and the vault toilets... Umm... Well people go behind the structure. But I would definitely stay a few nights here. Very pleasant.

We did the Mirror Lake hike that ends in beautiful reflections of Mount Hood, and chest high fuchsia and yellow flowers to walk through. From Mirror Lake we continued on the Tom, Dick and Harry trail which was worth the climb for the views of the mountains. We could see Hood, Adams, Jefferson, and Rainier though I understand you can sometimes see Mt. St. Helens too. These hikes were harder than are billed in some of the hiking guides. My sneakers were fine but we passed people starting off in dress sandals and low heels. We finished with a short easy hike to Zigzag falls before treating ourselves to fondue and a special hot cocoa at Timberline Lodge. What a beautiful area of the country this is.

Beautiful views here. The hike to the lake is easy for beginners, with a rewarding view on the side of the lake. Dispersed camping available in a pristine spot. Dog friendly, but no trash cans or water (other than stream and lake) along the trail. The trail to Tom, Dick and Harry mountain is also beautiful, through first hike with a moderate to difficult finish, but well worth the views. There was still snow at the peak when we did it in June. Bring double the water that you think you'll need. The reward of going the entire way is breathtaking views of multiple snow covered mountains (usually). Incredible beauty.

I don't think there is a bad National Forest in this area. Mount Hood itself is part of this National forest and there's many hikes and lakes to see. Most of the Lakes take some hiking to get into. Don't forget to have your Forest parking pass which is $5 a day or $30 for the year.

Really, what's not to love about the Mt. Hood National forest? I venture into the forest any chance i get for hiking, shooting, or looking for bigfoot. As a matter of fact i tend to keep a thick layer of Earth from the Mt. Hood area with me at all times. Well, it coats the bottom of the Jeep anyways. But every time i hop back in the Jeep it is a subtle reminder that i would much rather be clawing my way up some muddy mountain than driving my sorry self back to work. Thanks Mt. Hood for giving me something to do on the weekends!
