Mary Macleod's Shortbread

About

Mary Macleod’s Shortbread is Toronto’s finest and most unique gourmet cookie store. Baking many different varieties of hand-made shortbread using only the purest ingredients, this charming shop has been delighting customers since 1981.

Story

Mary started Mary Macleod's Shortbread in 1981, becoming the first business in Canada devoted exclusively to hand-made, pure shortbread. Her recipe is based on the traditional Scottish shortbread recipe passed down from her grandmother to her mother, and then to her.

She started baking at home for restaurants, and eventually opened her first retail shop under the marquee of The Capital Theatre in North Toronto. Line-ups outside the shop were commonplace and she often baked throughout the night to keep up with demand. Newspapers, magazines, and television offered glowing reviews of her cookies, beautiful packaging, and personalized customer service which have become the hallmarks of our family brand.

Today, this family business is run by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Macleod. We're now located at 639 Queen Street East, on the edge of Toronto's Riverdale community. We invite you to visit us and take in the fresh baked aromas. While the Chocolate Crunch shortbread is our signature cookie, we continue to create unique flavour combinations, including our latest, and Sharon's first shortbread creation, Maple Crunch.

Absolutely love the shortbread from here. They are the best that I’ve ever had. Crumbly, full of flavour and melts in your mouth. The smell when you first walk into the store entices you to want to buy everything in sight! My favourites are the hazelnut crunch, chocolate crunch and espresso. They never fail to disappoint. Also, they give you a free cookie with every purchase.

Delicious but pricey shortbread. My favourites are the Original, the Dutch Chocolate, and the Wholewheat Walnut. For some unfathomable reason, the shortbread sold by the dozen tastes better than its smaller counterpart sold by the tin. It will be informative if the store provides nutrition fact of the shortbread sold by the dozen to aid customers on a diet. You get a free shortbread when visiting the store and making a purchase. There’s a bus stop right in front of the shop, and street parking is available.

This place is fantastic, but sadly moving west. You'll need to seek them out at their new location

Just picked up a dozen assorted box and was given their signature cookie to try while waiting. Pretty good shortbread, not too hard or soft and will be better if there was tea to go with it.

I enjoy traditional, home made Scottish shortbread every year at Christmas - I am lucky enough to have a family member who makes their old family recipe every year. This has made me a bit of a shortbread snob, I'm afraid - and I don't usually even bother trying anything storebought. My boss purchased a tin of their shortbread cookies for a customer gift and we had the opportunity to sample them. They were so highly praised, I decided they were worth a shot, and am I ever glad I did! Buttery, melt in-your-mouth amazingness, these cookies are a very close second to the ancient family recipe I enjoy every year. A real treat! I am so impressed with these cookies, I had to review them!
