Story

Imagine you are driving down I-15. You're trying to decide whether you should take the 12-mile detour to Lava Hot Springs. If you've never gone down a speed slide, soaked in 112-degree water, or tasted Hot Lava Pizza, then take Exit 47 and stop at this campground! If you've only floated in man-made lazy rivers, then it's time to rent a tube and float dow a real river - the Portneuf. Even if you've already experienced the fun of these activities, you'll want to come back to Lava Hot Springs and try them all over again. You'll also enjoy relaxing at this pretty campground with sparkling new shower facilities and gorgeous surroundings (and a passing train every once in a while). So get off the freeway and stay at Lava Hot Springs KOA. You can trust the friendly staff will make sure you have a great time.

It may not have the best scenery, and is right along the highway, but the staff and cabin makes it all worth it! We were in a bond with our car breaking down and they were more than accommodating to our situation. Wireless signal was perfect! Bathrooms were recently renovated and very nice! Will stay again when given the chance!

We stay here every year for a family reunion and it's certainly one of the cleaner campgrounds at which I've stayed, and probably the best one in Lava. The close proximity to town, the pool. the hot springs, and the river are also pluses. The staff & service are somewhat of a minus due to their general apathy to any issue/complaint. We book our family trips a year in advance so we can have all our trailers in a row and when we check in, they've always separated us (3 years in a row now). The staff always blames it on the "computer system" but I think it's more of a "I don't really give a @$%" attitude that's the problem.

It seems like the train passes for an extensive time in the early morning. It's hard to zone out. The KOA attendant was aggressive when asking us to move our truck off of the grass (by grass, I mean more than half was dirt). He asked 3 times; the 3rd time, he knocked on the door to my trailer. This was explaining that the person who had the keys to the truck was using the facilities. All of this happened within 30 minutes of his first request. It is highly unlikely we will return to this KOA.

This is a great campground for visiting Lava Hot Springs. I found the staff very friendly and the facilities well-kept. The campground is right on the portneuf river, and I could hear water falling over waterfalls from where we camped. The only downside to the location is its proximity to the highway and a train route, but what are you going to do? My experience was definitely five-star.
