L'Express

Story

Bistro français très réputé sur le Plateau Mont-Royal à Montréal ouvert pour les petits-déjeuners, déjeuner et diner depuis 1980.

Famous French bistro, located on the Plateau Mont-Royal in Montréal, opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner since 1980.

We decided to try L'Express after hearing many positive reviews, and the dining experience was great.nnThe interior gave me a classic Parisian bistro feel, just like stepping into an old French film set. Staffs were friendly. The large jar of house pickles brought to your table was such a fun and memorable touch that adds to the classic French bistro atmosphere.nnFood was great, we really enjoyed everything. Celery remoulade was refreshing. I also highly recommend the Boudin noix aux pommes, it was rich and flavorful. My boyfriend even stepped out of his comfort zone to try this blood sausage dish, and he ended up enjoying it as well.nnDefinitely will come back to explore more of the menu next time in Montreal.
Need reservation. Decor is like a classic French restaurant. Quite noisy but doesn’t bother me. Be polite to them and service staff will treat you better.nnFirst time here, we ordered:nFish soup - very flavourful with Clam and fish, rich in Umami taste. This is a personal preference, with that rich umami taste, it would taste more better if u add abit of salt if u feel the soup tasted not salty but abit off. I loved the soup a lot more after added abit of salt. Thats me, use as your own risk! nnHomemade Ravioli, must try in my opinion, the sauce is soooooo flavourful!! Reminds me of a rich Demi Glacé sauce!nnQuail - nicely roasted and juicy meat and very flavourful!nnThe sauce for both dishes are very quite , taste similar but fit well with the dish! Yum!nnDessert wise, it’s good but doesn’t “wow” like the Quail and Ravioli. A solid 5 stars experience
It had been years since I had been here and heard that they had redecorated. Our kids had actually made a reservation the following night unbeknownst to us. Went back with our friends and we arrived a bit late due to parking troubles. It didn’t help that the resto was difficult to find as the signage isn’t in view. We sat and chatted a bit and were not impressed at the way our waiter greeted us. Nonetheless, we proceeded to order our food and the attitude continued when my wife was asking questions about the menu. I had the smoked herring which was the best thing I had that evening. It was well prepared and delicious. My wife ordered the salmon which she enjoyed as a main and I had the steak tartare. My tartare wasn’t great. Mid at best. The meat was fresh but lacking flavour although they did get the spice level correct. Was tempted by the maple profiteroles but at over $17, I passed. Not sure why dessert prices have gone through the roof especially for a bistro. Sadly, my kids had an even worse experience with service the following evening. Suffice it to say, I won’t be back as there are better bistro experience like Lemeac, Chez Lévesque or Brasserie Bernard in Montreal to name a few all with better service and food.
food was so good we came back twice in 3 days.nnbeef cappacio was super fresh. foie gras parfait was amazing. hanger steak was perfection. lamb shank tender. dessert was superb. profiterole and lemon tart are standouts.nnwine list is affordable and good too.nservice is quick and so is their turnaround.nreservations are needed so do call them.
Overall great food and authentic French environment.nDuck confit: duck cooked super well, the red sauce/bean mixture it came with was good, but would have preferred another side.nQuail: really good. Everything paired well and the meat was well cooked. Sauce and rice were perfect.nProfiteroles: sooo good. not too sweet.nChocolate cake: really good no complaints
