Bistro français très réputé sur le Plateau Mont-Royal à Montréal ouvert pour les petits-déjeuners, déjeuner et diner depuis 1980.

Famous French bistro, located on the Plateau Mont-Royal in Montréal, opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner since 1980.

En 1979, deux amoureux qui faisaient du théâtre rêvent d'un restaurant beau, bon, abordable, ouvert à tous, tout le temps. Il n'ont pas un sou mais trouvent deux associés pour acheter une maison rue Saint-Denis à Montréal. L'architecte fait des miracles.

Simple, brillant, unique, élégant, accessible. L'Express ouvre le 19 décembre 1980. Un succès immédiat, une première, mille fois copié et imité depuis. Américain pour les Français, bistro parisien pour les gens de New York ou Boston. Montréalais.

The lunch we had here was one of the highlights of our trip to Montreal. It's an authentic, old-school French restaurant. The staff were among the best I've seen. They knew exactly what they were doing and went about it very efficiently. The food was perfect. I had the chicken liver pate, then the quiche. I asked the server;s recommendation on which wine to choose and she didn't let me down. The atmosphere is relaxed and we never felt rushed, even though we ended up taking almost two hours over lunch. We could have been in and out in less than an hour though, if we'd been in a rush. The clientele was varied and included tourists and locals in roughly equal measure. If I lived here I'd eat at L'Express once a week.

Deeleecious. Had the shrimp risotto, vanilla ice cream and an espresso. Ice cream was a tad less flavorful than what I expected, but pleasantly spiced with herbs. Worth exploring further. The decor and lighting is both classy and bright, which made conversation highly energetic and engaging.

Sometimes all you want from a restaurant are the classics, executed to perfection, with servers who know their stuff. L’Express delivers this in spades. One of my fave quintessential Montreal dining experiences. Beautiful French bistro setting. ~$200 for a three course meal for two, with wine.

Excellent classic French restaurant in Montreal. Actually, it is one of my favorite restaurant and I have been going there for more than a decade. What's interesting is that every week they have new and temporary items in the menu so you get a new experience every time you visit. The classic and most popular items stays in the menu such as the steak tartare which is one of the best in Montreal. Other notable pros: great wine list with lots private imports, free mini pickles, open at lunch time.

Reservation is highly recommended. But we ended up walking in without one because we wanted some good French food. The host was kind enough to improvise a table for us after a 15-20 min wait. This restaurant is more upscale in terms of service and food. They offer really authentic french food. We had the bone marrow, squid salad and steak tar-tar. All of which was amazing. I would def re-visit when back in Montreal.
