Headed to Port Dover on a Sunday afternoon to get fish and chips and take the dog for a walk. Knechtel’s had a line, but it moved quickly. My husband and I got halibut and chips. Decent meal. We love Knechtel’s because there are lots of picnic tables to enjoy your meal outside, and our dog can sit with us. We can’t eat anywhere else at Port Dover with the dog. We like this spot for the simple fish and chips on the beach!nAugust 25, 2024
This place is a popular, family owned Port Dover staple since 1960. It’s known for its speciality, Lake Erie fish, but since we don’t eat fish, can only speak to the hot dog and fries we had. Service was great, even though they were very busy, and food was priced as expected for a beachside pickup window. They have lots of menu items to choose from. The hot dog was 3 , but fries were definitely 5 . Fries always taste better at the beach, but these were exceptional. They did them extra crispy as we requested, and I regretted not getting them as poutine, as I bet they’d be awesome. You add your own condiments yourself at counters with plenty of items including pickles, tomatoes, onions. Outdoor seating only. There’s a fenced off section of picnic tables available at the beachside of the building, as well as in front, with most tables covered by umbrellas. Free 2 hour street parking is available in front if you’re lucky enough to snag a free spot!
Update: went back today Aug 15, 2024. Perch tacos are still great!nnGreat location on the beach in Port Dover, plenty of tables. We ordered a couple different items, poutine $7, chili fries $8.50, kids chicken strips $7 and pickerel tacos $17. Great value for money, tacos were great, big portion and tons of flavor! 2nd year in a row coming here on our vacation and will be back!
We have been coming to Knechtel’s for many years now. It has almost become a staple go to when we come to Port Dover beach. The service is constantly quick and accurate. The food, although deep fried and greasy, is always hot and comes out quick. It’s nice for an easy beach snack. The kids always enjoy the dinosaur shaped nuggets and the fries are always fresh, hand cut. Check them out on the next trip to Port Dover.
Good food including the fried perch, along with their delicious tar tar sauce that they make. The rest of the food is good too, hot dog, burger and fries. Service was a bit slower but still ok. Lots of outdoor places to sit.
