Hubbard Park

Story

Hubbard Park, located in the Hanging Hills of Connecticut, is a wooded, mountainous park located just outside the city center of Meriden, Connecticut. It comprises approximately 1800acre of carefully kept woodlands, streams, dramatic cliff faces, flower gardens, and the James Barry bandshell and picnic spots, as well as its showpiece, Mirror Lake. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryMost of the land was given to the town by Walter Hubbard, president of the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company. In his donation, the land was given outright, with the stipulation that everything connected with the park was to remain free of charge for the people of Meriden, and that no concessions for profit were ever allowed within the park area.Hubbard spent a great deal of time and energy creating the park. He personally spent between $400,000 and $500,000 to clear land, build roads, and construct Mirror Lake with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted, who is best known for designing New York City's Central Park. Hubbard built a tower on East Peak, known as Castle Craig, to resemble the towers built by the Turks along the Danube River in the 12th century.According to local folklore, Hubbard Park is said to be haunted by the ghostly presence of the Black Dog of the Hanging Hills (see Hanging Hills).

I'm sorry no pics today, but if you head on over you will see the Christmas lights. Unfortunately they are lacking in imagination. They are still put up in the same places as they have been as they have been for the past what 15-20 years. Come on how hard is it to move them around a little? Well at least thus year 1 - 1 of them many animals on display has colored eyes... Oh joy!! That was nice to see. I hope that (girl) whoever did that didn't get fired..lol. Well on a More positive note Hubbard Park IS a Great place to bring your kids show them them the lights. Come spring and summer the play scape is awesome fun for them. And yes for you moms and dads and grandparents out there there is a public restroom. Although I'd bring bring some Lysol wipes with me... Ya never know right...

I've been coming here since I was a child and now I bring my daughter. Its a great place to hang out. There's tons of space. The lake can be pretty dirty sometimes though. People dont seem to know what trash cans are. Hiking trails cover the mountain side leading up to the castle. Daffodil festival and similar events are held here annually.

We went to see the holiday light displays. They were worth the trip from Newtown. Thank you, Meriden for sharing this with all of us!
