HI-St.John's City Hostel

Great location, owner and staff were lovely. The kitchen is well stocked up for cooking and there’s a hang out area there. My main complaint is that the bathroom in my room was really grimey, it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for days. Visible dirt and hair everywhere. It was weird because everything else seemed fairly clean but it was really gross. Otherwise nice enough place though, fine for a quick trip.

Im not sure whether to give 5 stars or 1 star. I got no sleep all the nights i was here, the bunk beds creak and shake and people were constantly coming and going. The hostel has no place to sit other than the dining room. But the staff were very good natured and helpful, laundry was free and everything was prestine clean except the shower floor which was kinda gross.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! Great location, friendly staff through out my stay. Met the owner and he is very nice and helpful. Planning my next stay and I have only been gone 10 hrs!

I really, really loved the location of St. John’s City Hostel! It’s a 2-minute walk from the harbour, which I soon discovered was my favourite part of town due to all the fun nightlife and shopping throughout the day & night! From there it’s also pretty easy to walk or get a taxi to anywhere. Plus, the pubs on George Street are really cool. You’re also definitely going to get a good night’s sleep in fresh linen, which is always a bonus. Really clean and safe environment throughout the facilities too. The staff are also amazing and its management is super attentive and friendly. There were at least two girls who checked me out on the last day who wore huge smiles and were happy to chat away without the feeling of forced customer service you get in plenty of hotels. I would recommend City Hostel if you’re looking for a more comfortable environment than party hostels near clubs, but are still looking to meet other travellers and learn about the Newfoundland and Labrador culture that emanates from downtown St. John’s.

An absolutely great stay at the hostel. The staff were ever helpful and it was a great place to meet people from all over the globe. The shower is hot and and has great water pressure and the beds are easy to make up upon arrival. The hostel is also located in a great area to base yourself in St John’s and it is very easy to get to all of the nearby sights. It’s reasonably priced and I’d recommend it highly for anyone travelling in the St John’s area.

What a warm welcome we received at this hostel. The friendly staff welcomed us in and made us feel comfortable right away. They told us of place to see and things to do. They invited us along on their outings. The room and shower was very clean and comfortable. Thanks for the hospitality. Will definitely be back anytime we’re in St. John’s.

I adored my stay in St John's and at the hostel. I met the most lovely bunch of people, some of my most treasured memories have been had here. The common area is cozy and relaxing and a hub when getting to know other travelers. The staff are great at facilitating nights out, like trivia are getting Screeched In! Try Yes B'ys on George street. I love that bar. Dave the owner is a real gem and so kind. Part of what I loved was watching the generosity shown to people travelling. One of the things I adore is the free spices in the kitchen! All hail garlic salt making any dish taste better. I never had to wait long for the bathrooms, the wifi is great, and the hostel is located in a great area. Close to downtown and a big supermarket.

In the off-season showed up at the door of HI St John’s for a dorm bed. I checked in then due to some unexpected circumstances had to fly out that evening. The staff were great accommodating my sudden change of plans. The place had a chill and cool vibe, was clean, attractive, freshly painted, with a comfy well-lit room. I know the central St. John’s scene and the hostel’s superbly placed - within easy walking distance – for everything urban you might need. I was disappointed I couldn’t stay for the week I was anticipating. Thanks HI stj for your knowledge, adaptability, and friendliness.

Best hostel ever!! A1 on every aspect. The staff is particularly kind and makes you feel like at home right away. Location is perfect, right downtown. Super clean, nice kitchen, great place to meet fellow travelers... Everything you are looking for in a hostel and more. Would recommend to anyone going through St. John's, definitely a must!
