Caring and passionate staff, fair pricing.

What a shame to have to write such damning review of a local bike shop, but the customer service - right from the owner - is deplorable. Brought my road bike in for some servicing, including having my chain cleaned. The next day I took the bike out for a long ride and the chain (with only about 1500km on it) snapped while I was on the other side of the city. Half a day later and a whopper of a taxi bill, I was back at the shop asking them to put the chain back on. After complaining he couldn't get to it right away, the owner begrudgingly took my bike in and asks me to come back in an hour - whereupon he has fixed it, but is adamant it wasn't their fault, that it was a coincidence that my chain broke on the very first ride after they serviced it. And he wants $5 for the cost of a new pin. After some heated back and forth about the probability of this being a coincidence, and his assertion that "I didn't know what I was talking about" (so much for the customer always being right) he invited me to take him to court - over $5. Realizing this was hopeless I took out my credit card to pay the $5 and be done with this shop, forever. Then when he saw the credit card, he refused payment, because he can't be bothered to run the transaction. What the hell? So he didn't want the $5, he only wanted...what? to teach me a lesson? Glad this local bike shop is so successful in today's market that they can afford to lose customers out of pure spite.

I have been using this shop for over 5 years for my high end mountain bike. All of the mechanics and the owner are terrific and friendly people. Great mechanics on ALL types of bikes. There is a continual flow of people walking in to the shop looking for minor repairs. Most are served within minutes. I have witnessed the owner doing quick repairs at no cost. Amazing community store. My experience is that no shop is perfect in diagnosing a problem but these guys will work on it until they get it right. The charges are always fair. You will never be ripped off.

Christine and I rented city bikes from Grand Cycle for our tour of Montreal. The staff (Liz) was so helpful in orienting us to the different sites to visit, provided a useful map highlighting safe bike paths, and along with the tech staff provided high quality bikes, which included a helmet and lock. The price of $25 was very reasonable. We ended up biking to Les Rapides Park after a visit to the Atwater Marche for picnic provisions and then went up to Mont Royal. I would highly recommend Grand Cycle for your rental needs, especially if you're from out of town.
