Cheskie's

Fresh and homey kosher bakery. Brooklyn style. If you're getting something as simple as a marble cake, you can count on the chocolatey parts to be dense and rich. My favourites are the donuts, flaky danish, seven layer and marble cake. Mmmmmm....

No thanks! I was in the neighbourhood, and one of my friends suggested I try Cheskie's. I browsed their window from the outside, and decided to give it a go. As I enter the shop, there are two (what I assume were) hasidic women behind the counter. I should mention, that I am tall, blond and blue eyed, so very much not Jewish looking. As I enter the shop, the two women, didn't so much ran, as flew into the backroom. I stood there waiting for about 10 minutes, while they were hiding (I assume) in the backroom. Finally I left, disgusted by what I can only assume was prejudice. So, no, I will not recommend Cheskie's.

I tried their rugelach and honestly have had better ones before. It was too dry to my taste, couldn't taste the chocolate that much, and service could have been more friendly...

This is a fabulous bakery. All pastries and breads is absolutely delicious there. Especially there cheese products.

5 stars for their chocolate Babkas, 4 stars for their cheese filled deserts, and 3 for the majority. Not to say they're not good, they're very delicious, but I reserve 5 stars for the best and I promise you will be hard pressed to find a better tasting chocolate pastry in montreal.
