Really wanted to love this place but wasn't blown away. The staff were absolutely kind and lovely and the best part of our dinner. From the host to our server to even the bartender, they all had the biggest welcoming smiles. However, the food took forever tonight and I'm not sure if it's because they did not have enough staff. We ordered a kale salad and it came at 8pm and then our three other dishes came an hour later at 9pm. The kale salad was good, but it seemed plain. We also shared the beef tenderloin which came with a delicious sauce but we both said we have had better elsewhere. For $47 you only get three small pieces of meat. We had the tortellini but asked for no mushrooms. Again, nothing special that made us say "wow this is so good" Our last dish that we shared was the salmon. This was maybe the best dish out of all of them. The croquette was good but the salmon a bit dry. Unfortunately nothing that we ate here tonight really left a lasting impression! So I don't think we will be coming back.
I really enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere at Black Walnut. The Steak "Frites" and Beef tenderloin were both great although the sides on the first were better as their ketchup is really yummy while the potato and vegetable sides on the Beef tenderloin were only okay. The Animal cocktail was very enjoyable as well. The Black Walnut Burger had great flavors and is definitely something I would recommend. Overall a great restaurant and I'll definitely come back again.
First time visiting this grand opening restaurant in Cambie neighbourhood. Food is absolutely delicious and every dish can taste the freshness, all hard dedication prep work behind the scenes has shown the amazing plating food presentation. Enjoyed every single bite. Interior design is absolutely gorgeous and modern. Strong recommended to visit this restaurant!
With a rich blend of flavours, the food and drinks here are astounding. Compliments to the chef along with one of the cooks, Jas, who helped prepare these amazing dishes! The atmosphere was elegant and striking while retaining a warmth and welcoming touch. I cannot recommend this place enough!
Amazing wine selection, plating perfection, and food was so well balanced and delicious! Our server was very sweet and attentive too. Thank you for a wonderful experience!Food: 5/5
What an amazing place. Our waiter Yousef was very attentive, and my glass - be it wine, a cocktail, or water was always full. The food came out fast and was fantastic. Everything I asked for was catered to exactly as I wanted. The decorum was great, almost forgot I was on Cambie street. Spent my quarter life crisis birthday here and I’m looking forward to come back soon. The bartender clearly new how to throw a drink together too - highly recommended!
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Black Walnut. The stellar food and drinks coupled with the warm and attentive service made this a date night to remember. Special shout-out to our wonderful server, Kaeleigh D. She provided some great recommendations, and accommodated our requests with ease. We ordered the dry-aged tarakihi and mushroom tart for our starters. The tarakihi was so fresh, and came with a delectable watermelon gazpacho. The mushroom tart was earthy and flavourful - a real standout starter that we would order again. For our mains, we ordered the daily fish and the vegetarian tortellini. The daily fish was a black cod in a white wine sauce. The cod was cooked perfectly. The tortellini was solid, as well, but could have used a bit more of a punch. We concluded our meal with the corn cheesecake, which came highly recommended by our server. It did not disappoint! The cheesecake had a gorgeous whipped texture, which made it a delight to eat. It was well-balanced with a nice corn flavour and not too sweet. We would be remiss if we did not mention the excellent cocktails. We ordered the Pink Sour, Sunset Negroni, El Bandido and The Fresh. All four cocktails blew us away, and we were pleasantly surprised at the prices $13-15 range. Overall, Black Walnut is a welcome new addition to the neighbourhood, and we look forward to returning soon. Vegetarian options: Mushroom tart and tortellini. Dietary restrictions: Plenty of vegetarian, vegan and pescatarian options.
Celebrated a big decade birthday here last weekend with my family and the service was too notch! They let us bring our own cake, stored it in their fridge and helped serve it as well for no cake cutting fee! We really enjoyed the fried oysters, bison tongue and chips, foie gras & duck liver pate, and the steak frites. The cocktails are also yummy! I will return to try their brunch! Kid-friendliness: The restaurant is big enough and spacious enough for kids to be at your table and not feel like other people wouldn’t enjoy a nice intimate meal. My boys are 9 and 7.
Have lived in Riley Douglas Park for a decade now. Cambie Village needed a restaurant like this. The room is beautiful now and unrecognizable from before. With high ceilings and all the hard surfaces, it could be challenging for those hard of hearing. Would categorize it as casual fine dining, though a $25 burger can be found on the menu for budget-conscious diners. Wanted to order *everything* off the menu. Ended up with mostly raw bar appies, the kale salad, and fish of the day. Wine list is small but well-curated. Enjoyed dinner so much, came back next morning for Sunday brunch. Black Walnut is in my top two local dining experiences this year and the other was at a Michelin-starred resto. Definitely will be back soon. Vegetarian options: Lots of tasty vegetarian and pescatarian options. Parking: Even on a Saturday night of a long weekend, there were plenty of spots in and around the neighbourhood. Though it is easily walkable from Main or Oak Streets and Canada Line.
Summary: still going through some growing pains - the restaurant is beautiful, food is good, but service wasn’t up to par. We were excited to see a new restaurant open up in this neighborhood. The host and the wait staff were very welcoming and initially very attentive prior to ordering…however, the feeling was that the wait staff may have been a bit inexperienced as it felt awkward at times. During the meal, my empty coffee cup and our empty water glasses lingered and my coffee cup went empty for the whole time there. I think greater attention to the guests during the meal is warranted. We left feeling that we would try the restaurant again but not for a few months.
