Classic canto dishes here in a more upscale environment. Really liked the salt and pepper squid, beef and mushroom, west lake soup and fried rice dishes. 2 star lost because I saw 1 employee use the bathroom and then run 1 hand under the sink for a second and left without drying his hand. Need to do a better job with hygiene especially as a restaurant employee
While the food was noticeably of a higher quality with the exception of the spare ribs, which were very fatty it is also very apparent that some of their staff don’t like their jobs given the attitude and snarky comments we received. As much as I enjoyed the food, I would not return due to the disrespectful service provided.
Kirin showcases Chinese cuisine in an authentic atmosphere. It has 4 branches in Downtown, West Vancouver, Richmond, & New Westminster. If you don’t know authentic Chinese food, whether don’t go there or go with a Chinese friend. So, if you are on yourself there, order many dim sums with different tastes which is a safer option. Menu is huge and there are dozens of food there. This high number causes confusion and probably wrong orders. Servers are all surprisingly men. They try to be respectful, yet not that nice. Kirin is an award-winning restaurant renowned for its dim sums. Suggestions Lunch Menu: * Numbers 1, 14, 15, 16, 17, & 18. They are all generic dim sums with less risk. * You always have the option to choose different noodles like number 58 Shanghai style noodle. Numbers 33 steamed pureed egg yolk & 37 egg custard tart are delicious to have as dessert. Enjoy!
As many have noted, the service is rude and even insulting. The dim sum was quite good, especially the xiao long bao no photo because they were instantly devoured and shrimp eggplant. But it wasn't worth feeling unwelcome so it wouldn't be a good place to revisit unless they fix their service problem.
Delicious food! Enjoyed all the dishes! My favorites would have to be the spare ribs and the calamari. It does get busy but the food is fresh. I will note that the food didn't all come at once and there was waiting time between each dish. Will definitely come again!
A 3.5-4 overall for dim sum experience. In the heart of dr they have multiple locations, the exterior does not reflect the interior with its modern design and clean esthetics. The service here is professional but at the same time, they know how to be efficient with seating, cleaning the table, serving and when payment time comes. The food does come at a higher quality - some items more than others custard bun, Har how, preserved duck egg congee + a few others. Weaker one was the turnip cake. They do not have any rice roll shrimp, beef, BBQ pork here. It is on the higher end when it comes to pricing averaging $8-9 for a dish. They do serve other foods as well. Note - they do have parking underground apparently.
Every person from Vancouver I’ve asked about dim sum has brought up Kirin, a local institution. Pricey with small portions? Yes. Long wait times? Absolutely. Can the service be on the curt and inattentive side? Yep. I can understand some of the mixed reviews Kirin has gotten, but the high quality dim sum here is the real deal. As opposed to food sitting on dim sum carts as is customary in NYC, where I’m from originally, the dim sum here falls in the made-to-order camp and is absolutely divine. Pan fried radish pudding Luo bu gao that is perfectly crispy and then literally melts in your mouth. Steamed prawn and pork dumplings covered in flying fish roe. Cuddlefish ink infused sweet buns filled with hot, molten egg yolk that’s fresh out of the oven. Definitely not your ordinary dim sum, and I’m not sure if anywhere in the US can compare
Might be the only dim sum place in DT? Small seating, but clean and modern interior. Service is okay, food is a bit above average. Most of the clientele is non-Asian here, so food quality should be pretty good for them. It’s just very convenient for us, no need to drive to Richmond for dim sum.
One of my favorite dimsum and Chinese restaurants to eat at when I visit Vancouver BC from Seattle. The shrimp dumpling and shumai are some of the best I've ever had! Food The dimsum at Kirin is some of the best dimsum that I've ever had. The shrimp balls hargow and shumai are my favorite since they are so big and juicy. The dimsum in Seattle just doesn't compare. Overall the food here is excellent and I can't wait to come again. Atmosphere Large restaurant with plenty of seating and well lit areas. Great for small or large parties. Can get a little bit loud inside though. Can come dressed as casual or formal as you want. Pricing Fair pricing for the dimsum and other items in the menu. You can choose what you want to eat and how much you want to order. Cheaper than the dimsum in Seattle. Service Service was okay. You might have to try to get the attention of the staff for service though. I don't base many of the ratings on service 5 star for food. Other Not too busy even though I came by at 1pm on a Saturday. Street parking in the area can be difficult as it is located in a busy area of downtown.
Warning, reservations need for Sunday Dim Sum. Was walking in the neighborhood deciding on what we should eat and on the spur of the moment decided Dim Sum was going to be my Sunday jam. Went inside, encountered the front reception staff, oops, "sorry no tables, restaurant full, no reservation, no food" I put on my biggest disappointment frown and threw out my "Thai card", "but I came all the way from Thailand to try out your dim sum"' lol and behold they managed to squeeze me in, great service. Dim sum was top qualify. Their dan dan noodle soup was especially savory, nice peanut flavoured broth, noodles perfectly cooked al dente. Har Gao filled with big plump crunchy shrimp, other dim sum dishes just as good. Nice leisurely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
